iPad or android for child?

I’m skint so I’m not buying it however DS’s grandparents and ex husband are clubbing together. They’ve asked me to choose iPad or android. Android is obviously cheaper. DS is 9, he has an iPhone6S so that he can listen to Spotify and text his dad. Doesn’t take the phone out anywhere and it’s in strict lockdown after 6pm where he can’t watch YouTube for example.

I don’t think it’s necessary for him to have a tablet but I’m not arguing with them and he wants it so he can read comics via Marvel Unlimited.

With an iPad, I could have the same restrictions on it as with the iPhone, ie he can’t use it after a certain time or there are limits on user time for certain apps.

I think you can do similar with an android but I think iPads last longer?

If they’re going to get him one, it should be something that lasts?

I would feel better knowing screentime is restricted so I am leaning towards an iPad which was their first suggestion but thought I’d ask Mumsnet what setup you might have in your household?

Or at 9, does it really matter and they should just get him something cheap to read his comics on!

Oh as an aside, he does read books - he has a huge bookshelf full funnily op enough of recommendations from mumsnet. Comic books are expected alive, and for £10 a month he can read the entire marvel back catalogue on a tablet

Android tablets are a LOT cheaper and work fine. I’ve got ScreenTime restrictive app on the kids’ cheap old Samsung tablets and it blocks apps and sets time limits to the delight of both children

Android, he's nine he'll sit on it/drop it kill it by accident. When a replacement screen costs more than a tablet better going low priced for the moment. He's got his phone to look cool with, doen't matter what brand he has at home.

I agree, I realised that being able to sync stuff between an iPhone and iPad is not really useful aged 9. I’ll send them a link to a Samsung tablet, they seem reasonably well priced. I mean he’s not going to care which brand he gets!
