Made one tonight and although it was nice it wasn't perfect. It consisted of:
Browned mince beef.
Chopped onion,carrots,swede.
Peas.

These were cooked in gravy in the slow cooker for a few hours then put in oven dishes with fresh mash on top until golden brown on top.

I need your top tips pls.T.i.a.

Worcester sauce!

forrestgreen · 16/10/2020 22:29

Did you add a stock cube too, got to be good gravy

DesperatelySeekingSunshine · 16/10/2020 22:30

Definitely stock cube or even better stock pot for extra flavour.

PegasusReturns · 16/10/2020 22:33

It’s not a particular tasty dish although is improved by lots of salt, stock and cheese on top of the potato.

I prefer shepherds pie, as above plus plenty of red wine in with the mince.

Calyx72 · 16/10/2020 22:34

Worchester sauce seconded. Also brown the mince until the water cooks off and the mince is browner

YorkieTheRabbit · 16/10/2020 22:34

Bovril cubes
Worcestershire sauce
Black pepper
Whole grain mustard
Squirt of tomato ketchup

AriesTheRam · 16/10/2020 22:34

Beans? 🤮 no stock pot this time ive missed a trick there!

I find slow cookers give a weird bland taste. Heresy on Mumsnet I know.
I would cook in the oven on low for a couple of hours.

longtompot · 16/10/2020 22:49

I brown the mince, add some diced onion, sliced carrots seasoned with salt and pepper and cook until softened. I crumble in 3 or 4 Oxo cubes and add 600/800 ml water and add a couple of bay leaves and some dried herbs. I cook with the lid on for at least an hour. I take the lid off, add a good spoonful of Worcester sauce, and bubble until the sauce is thickened. Taste for seasoning. Pop in a dish and cover with buttery mashed potatoes. I brush melted butter, a sprinkle of salt, sometimes some herbs and bake in the oven for about 40 mins. Most of the time delicious.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2020 23:08

Leave out the swede and peas (have peas as a side veg, not in it). A bit of tomato purée or ketchup and/or Worcestershire sauce. The top needs a sprinkling of grated cheese.

CoffeeDay · 16/10/2020 23:12

Big handful of mature grated cheddar in the mash!

SingleHandSue · 16/10/2020 23:16

I love the shwartz shepherds pie mix Blush

It makes a really tasty shepherds pie although I use beef mince. The only extra thing I do is add 2/3 tsp of marmite to the mix instead of seasoning with salt.

Then I add microwave mashed potato and a load of cheese.

So easy and so tasty.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/10/2020 23:22

Worcester sauce.
Delia does leeks in her mash.
Beef stock.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 16/10/2020 23:27

Cinnamon in the mince
Leeks & a frightening amount of butter in the potatoes

mrsbyers · 16/10/2020 23:31

Ketcap Manis - a sweet soy sauce adds depth and umami

Spam88 · 16/10/2020 23:33

A fuck ton of cheese in your mash and then some more on top.

Maskedcrusader · 16/10/2020 23:34

I add tomato puree to the mince before adding the gravy & a good glug of Worcestershire sauce. I do have regular & half sweet potato for the mash and serve with lashings of HP fruity sauce.

weltonn · 16/10/2020 23:36

Tomato purée and a good dash of Worcestershire along with beef stock x

formerbabe · 16/10/2020 23:36

Brown mince, onions and carrots then tomato puree, beef stock, Worcester sauce, red wine, thyme.

Bloodylovecheese · 16/10/2020 23:40

HP sauce!

elephantoverthehill · 16/10/2020 23:41

Take your beef joint left overs and put through a mincer. Lightly fry a chopped onion, add minced beef and leftover vegetables (maybe diced). Add left over gravy, put in a dish and cover with mash potato. Grated cheese on top. Oven for about 40 minutes. It's a leftovers dish not one to do from scratch.

MeOnSea · 16/10/2020 23:45

This recipe is the business: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/cottage-pie/amp

(Aligns with a lot of the advice given by previous posters)

jackstini · 16/10/2020 23:49

Definitely no baked beans Shock

Brown the mince with no added oil
Add finely chopped onions, celery, carrots with a bit of garlic - sauté in the oil that came out of the mince
Add Henderson's (or Worcestershire sauce if you can't get Hendo's)
Beef stock cube and half cup of water, frozen peas and sweetcorn
Simmer on low for an hour
Chuck in a dish
Add smooth mash with butter and milk then grated cheese and put at 170 for 24 mins

weltonn · 17/10/2020 00:18

I second @MeOnSea, that is the recipe I use and it's gorgeous!
