Which iPhone?

13 year old would like a new phone for Xmas, she currently has an iPhone 6 which is on its way out.

She’s campaigning for an 11 which won’t be happening!

I’m looking to buy a reconditioned phone outright rather than a phone contract.

Not exactly sure of budget yet but what model should I go for?

How does an 8 compare to the X?

I can't comment on the 8, but I have an X and (for the first time in living memory!) am not about to upgrade it at the end of the month when my contract runs out.

I really like it, it's not too big and it does everything I want it to do.

greenemerald · 16/10/2020 15:25

I have the XR which I really like. It's cheaper than the X I think. It's a nice size too. I went from a 6 to this so it felt like a good step up as it has newer features.

perfumeistooexpensive · 16/10/2020 15:27

I've had my X for three years and it's like new. Battery life is still good. I usually change my phone every year, but this one is so good.

I have a personal 7 which does everything I need and a company 2020 SE which is the same really except it has wireless charging as well as the lightning socket.

An SE would suit as it's quick, good camera and pocket size

Whatisthisfuckery · 16/10/2020 15:32

I think they’ve discontinued the X?

I have had an 8 and an XR. The XR is more expensive but it’s got much better battery life. I think phones have got so fast nowadays that whatever you buy will be quick. I like the face ID but it’s a bit of a pain while wearing a mask. the XR is much bigger but you’ll certainly be able to see it better, also the sound is better.

Also bear in mind that if you’re buying new the 12s are out soon, so the 11s will be going down in price.

RhymesWithOrange · 16/10/2020 15:34

A reconditioned 8 would be a great phone for them. New 11s are becoming harder to come by as they have launched the 12.

cathyandclare · 16/10/2020 15:34

The X is great, I've got an 11 and the camera's better but otherwise tbh I was just as happy with the X. With the 12 coming out you may be able to get a good deal.

I’ve just replaced DD (16)s d iPhone 6 with the new SE.

Exactly the same size as the 6. Relatively budget friendly as far as iPhones go. My mum just went from 6 to SE also and is very happy.

Amazon has the SE for £379 the other day.

I told DD when she’s paying for her own phones she can buy what she likes but whilst I’m still paying the top of the range ones aren’t on the table.

bendmeoverbackwards · 16/10/2020 15:41

She would love a better camera. Some of her friends have 11s and she was very impressed with the camera quality.

But the cost! How do people afford these expensive phones especially for a young teen?

I have the XS from a 6s and it's great, not in any rush to upgrade any time soon much to my sons annoyance Grin

I hated the XR, it’s massive. I had one for a year and sold it to buy an 11 pro.
tywysoges · 16/10/2020 15:48

We upgraded DD’s 6s to the new SE. She really likes it, the only complaint so far is that she can’t set a live picture as her Home Screen Hmm

tywysoges · 16/10/2020 15:49

Cost wise, I was due an upgrade so changed networks and got the phone ‘free’. I wasn’t going to change my phone anyway, so worked out well.

Passthecake30 · 16/10/2020 15:54

I have a reconditioned 8, battery life is fine. Ds (12) son has the 6... I need to buy dd one for her bday and I’m thinking another 6, in order to avoid huge outcry...!

Dawnlassie · 16/10/2020 15:54

Why does it need to be an iphone? Plenty of other brands where you can get similar or better camera for less money.

bendmeoverbackwards · 16/10/2020 15:56

Nope @Dawnlassie we are an Apple family, there’s no going back! I have a Samsung for work and I hate it!

mogloveseggs · 16/10/2020 15:57

Dd went to an 8 plus from a 7 plus. She loves it.
It was second hand from the ioutlet.
In was really pleased with it. A few scratches but I didn't get the top one as money was tight.

bendmeoverbackwards · 16/10/2020 15:57

I have a 6 myself, it’s fine, I’m not too fussed about having the latest of everything.

OP posts:
bendmeoverbackwards · 16/10/2020 15:58

@mogloveseggs how much did you pay for an 8 if you don’t mind me asking?

OP posts:
mogloveseggs · 16/10/2020 16:02

About 350 I think it was. There's like a b c class different prices. So a would be good as new. We went for b.

mogloveseggs · 16/10/2020 16:03

They've got decent batteries in and you can pay for a proper iPhone box if you want.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 16/10/2020 16:23

I have the IPhone SE(2020) and I love it
Same chip as the IPhone 8, but cheaper!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 16/10/2020 16:26

Forgot to add Has wireless charging, Fingerprint ID and a great Camera

TicTacTwo · 16/10/2020 16:31

I have an 8 while my kids have XR. The 8 is fine imo and I'm in no rush to upgrade. The XR has no home button and has Face ID unlike my 8.

bendmeoverbackwards · 17/10/2020 12:01

So it looks like I’ll have to spend £350+ to get a decent model?
