Hi there,
I’m looking to start a discussion and do a little market research. I’ll start by saying I’m not involved with MLMs or direct selling and although I respect those that go down that route it’s not one I’ll be taking myself. I’m also not looking to start a career based around children activities that fit in with my children. So....
Prior to, and during the couple of years before I had my toddler (I also have three other children) I had a career in a global company. I ran the Intern Program and was PA to a couple of the directors. I am limited to 2 days a week childcare until she turns three when I can go for maybe three/four days childcare. I have worked full time with young kids and for various reasons it doesn’t work for me and the children.
I have my own business where I work a couple of days a week taking care of other people’s admin. But I feel my brain is turning to mush as my skills are so under-utilised. When I want to return to a paye role I’ll be up against people who have not had a career break and will be up to speed on industry news and practices. That coupled with being mid-40s will mean starting in a lower position and then working my way up again. Part time roles don’t tend to be as meaty as full time ones and are paid less. It’s very rare to find a role that is workable for a couple of days with a salary and benefits to match. 20 years in HR roles has taught me that and I found it much easier returning to the same company part time from my first maternity leave than finding a part time role afresh.
I’m looking for similar people like me, whose skills are not used anymore and who’ve had to take lower level roles and work back up. Or if you haven’t returned to work because of that reason, or childcare, or something else. I’m well aware that there are women who have fully supportive partners and family in terms of childcare, finances and time, and this is not a thread to bash women working full time. As I said earlier I am limited for the moment to 2 days childcare. Thanks for taking the time to read this x
