Golden syrup or honey in porridge?

CleverCatty · 16/10/2020 10:33

Chatting on phone to DM this morning - told her I've recently taken to having golden syrup in porridge in mornings - had a spare squeezy bottle of it - in summer and spring I have honey on yogurt and granola with blueberries.

So right now I have porridge, skimmed milk, blueberries and very small drizzle of golden syrup on top. DM thinks this is bad.

She only has honey. Blueberries don't sweeten it enough.

Someone solve my argument.

Just looked at both in my cupboard, from a "health" point of view there is literally no difference....

per 15g (tablespoon)
Honey - 50cal, 12g sugar
Golden Syrup - 48.75cal, 12g sugar

From a personal preference point of view, honey is lush and golden syrup is rank Grin

Golden syrup if you’re working class.
Honey if you’re middle class.

I was bought up in a flat over a shop so we only had white sugar. I didn’t taste golden syrup till I was 10.

Bloody hell, controversial or what?

Golden syrup and extra milk.

Salt

I like my porridge with a wee quarter teaspoon of white sugar just to sweet it very slightly. It doesn't need much. If I'm being good, I'll just eat it plain. I am intrigued by the concept of a spoon of mincemeat in it though...I'm going to have to try that one!

Oats with blueberries, dried cranberries and raisins, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, chopped walnuts, cinnamon and a tiny squeeze of honey

My DM thinks she is 'middle class' or 'working middle' - I guess I'm 'working class' as I like golden syrup! Grin

LOL - there is a slight calorific deficit in golden syrup so that's why I've been losing weight lately preens Grin

Golden syrup or honey or both but no porridge, it's awful stuffGrin

@GunsAndShips

Neither. Cinnamon or berries sometimes yes but I don't generally like it sweetened.

But you like what you like. There are no porridge topping laws.

there are no porridge topping laws

I think you will find there are. I refer you to the Ronnie Barker documentary series that illustrated what happens to those who ignore the Porridge Topping Regulations Act 1898.

I love Maple Syrup

DS has peanut butter

NomadNoMore · 16/10/2020 17:32

Condensed milk
You're welcome

sqirrelfriends · 16/10/2020 19:31

I find a banana and a dollop of nut butter sweetens it nicely without loads of extra sugar.

If I'm feeling like a treat then either brown sugar and cream or maple syrup.
