Golden syrup or honey in porridge?

CleverCatty · 16/10/2020 10:33

Chatting on phone to DM this morning - told her I've recently taken to having golden syrup in porridge in mornings - had a spare squeezy bottle of it - in summer and spring I have honey on yogurt and granola with blueberries.

So right now I have porridge, skimmed milk, blueberries and very small drizzle of golden syrup on top. DM thinks this is bad.

She only has honey. Blueberries don't sweeten it enough.

Someone solve my argument.

salt and peanut butter!

or sometimes a ginger nut

haba · 16/10/2020 12:33

I have raspberries and blueberries (frozen ones, so no faffing). If I had to add sweetness, I'd choose syrup, as that's how I ate it as a child (and it does taste amazing when melted).

Mincemeat on porridge sounds amazing, but I'd have to find a palm oil free mincemeat first - if anyone knows where please, PLEASE let me know!

Laufeythejust · 16/10/2020 12:38

Both are just sugar- both delicious!

I cook mine with milk and then let it cool before adding a scoop of chocolate protein powder in it and a chopped banana. Yum!

TroysMammy · 16/10/2020 12:40

Golden syrup definitely. I only use honey in baking or roasting and never on toasted products.

Carnation condensed milk out of a squeezy bottle - a neat sugar fix.

Meridian mincemeat is palm oil free. You can get it at Ocado.

Maple syrup. It's pricier than golden syrup though but tastes much nicer.

nosswith · 16/10/2020 13:11

Honey especially as it could be made locally and supporting a small enterprise.

haba · 16/10/2020 13:13

@Vello I love you! Star Thank you so much!

MollyButton · 16/10/2020 13:27

Maple Syrup. (Proper stuff preferably Organic).

vanillandhoney · 16/10/2020 13:35

Brown sugar and cinnamon!

Didyousaynutella · 16/10/2020 13:41

Maple syrup is best!

Coniferhedge · 16/10/2020 13:45

I'm glad other people are coming round to the mincemeat porridge love! Grin

As I said, not for every day, but I love it at Christmas or on a cold frosty morning, especially if it has snowed overnight!

FallonsTeaRoom · 16/10/2020 13:52

I have sugar. DH has sugar and salt. 🤢

Butter and brown sugar

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 16/10/2020 14:01

Last night I poured golden syrup onto a teaspoon and licked it like a lolly.

@MorrisZapp you are my people.

passthegin1234 · 16/10/2020 14:04

I used to have golden syrup but think it's quite bad for you. I have recently started mashing up a banana and that sorts out my sweet craving! Try it- it's delicious.

Whenwillow · 16/10/2020 14:05

Yours sounds delicious! I usually have a bit of maple syrup on mine, and cream. Utterly wonderful and only as a naughty treat.
Did you know you can get maple syrup flavoured golden syrup? That's not bad either.
While we're on it @CleverCatty try golden syrup on ice cream! It goes all chewy and is just lovely!

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 16/10/2020 14:06

Honey, obvs.

Cinnamon in porridge is just wrong. And probably illegal.

Porridge must be made with freshly grated nutmeg. And salt. And half water, half full cream milk. And camelina seeds. And usually some chopped apple or pear. Unless one's splashing out on the nicer prunes from Ocado.

Maybe some single malt in December ...

LazyFace · 16/10/2020 14:08

Cocoa powder mixed with icing sugar on porridge. Which is an evening meal for me anyway.

Whenwillow · 16/10/2020 14:10

The wonderful thing about porridge is that it can be used as a lovely carrier for all the things!
I usually eat fairly low carb but my goodness it's a lovely 'off the wagon' feast!

There is I think a local honey maker. Also there's someone who lives near to me and my DM (we both live near each other) who makes honey and sometimes gives us jars. Not seen him for a few months though
