Golden syrup or honey in porridge?

CleverCatty · 16/10/2020 10:33

Chatting on phone to DM this morning - told her I've recently taken to having golden syrup in porridge in mornings - had a spare squeezy bottle of it - in summer and spring I have honey on yogurt and granola with blueberries.

So right now I have porridge, skimmed milk, blueberries and very small drizzle of golden syrup on top. DM thinks this is bad.

She only has honey. Blueberries don't sweeten it enough.

Someone solve my argument.

Golden syrup is man -made and has no nutrition! Honey at least is natural and has trace elements. Raspberries or some other sweet fruit would be better. I don't make porridge but have oats and rice flakes with plant mylk and nuts, seeds and sometimes friut. It doesn't seem to need sweetening.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 16/10/2020 11:01

Neither

Raisins are so lovely in porridge and the honey golden syrup too sickly for me

potter5 · 16/10/2020 11:05

Cinnamon and sugar? I need to try this.

Ninkanink · 16/10/2020 11:06

Don’t forget the butter. 👍🙂

jillandhersprite · 16/10/2020 11:07

for porridge I love golden syrup, but will use honey if we have run out!

Can I tell you about my new porridge discovery though - carrot cake porridge? add some grated carrot, cinnamon, nutmeg, chopped nuts and/or raisins with some honey or syrup - love it!

lughnasadh · 16/10/2020 11:08

I'm with @Minty82

Brown sugar all the way.

It turns to a lovely golden, autumnel, stripe.

Ninkanink · 16/10/2020 11:09

Just to be clear, you don’t put the sugar and cinnamon into the porridge.

Make your porridge as usual, adding a pinch of salt and a small amount of sugar (maybe a flat teaspoon). Serve up, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar to taste on top of the porridge and top that with some butter.

Ninkanink · 16/10/2020 11:10

Even better if you have some Demerara sugar to hand. 👍👍

oldwhyno · 16/10/2020 11:11

golden syrup for me, but I could manage honey, maple syrup or brown sugar if I had to.

anyone claiming it's "bad" because it's sugar, or has "no nutrition", or whatever, are missing the point entirely. Probably missing the point to life in general to be honest. I pity them all and worry for the world.

CleverCatty · 16/10/2020 11:15

thanks all for your suggestions.

I don't give a flying fish (LOL) if certain things are man made or not - I happily used to put Sarah's honey with ginger in my porridge until evil Sainbos or whoever it was stopped stocking it - and I can't find it anymore apart from online and expensive - if anyone can tell me they've found it in waitrose I'll get it there!

DM just likes to 'educate me' - I will try it with cinnamon only and maybe add sugar etc onto it. Salt. F no. Just why??

Grandparents used to drizzle cream, sugar (white always) and butter onto it.

mumsiedarlingrevolta - will I think try raisins - I like them - blueberries are only the 5 a day rubbish that I try to go by.

I have porridge most mornings, am a total convert but am a bit boring in that I do it the same every day - I make it with almond/coconut milk, stir through frozen berries as it's cooking, top with a small banana and a drizzle of maple syrup. Sometimes if there is a ropey apple in the bowl I'll cook it with that instead and some cinnamon.

Love the suggestions on here - sultanas and demerara sugar are going on my shopping list :)

Syrup. Because honey is bee vomit.

Coniferhedge · 16/10/2020 11:22

I usually have stewed apple and cinnamon in mine or frozen raspberries (they defrost as it cooks). If I'm feeling really frivolous, at Christmas or in the depths of Winter I sometimes put a spoon of mincemeat in my porridge straight from the jar. Stir it through and it's delicious!

gretagreengrapes · 16/10/2020 11:24

Golden syrup. Occasionally peanut butter. But never cold juicy fruit on hot gloopy porridge, ever!

I second that mincemeat in porridge is delicious!
TeamLannister · 16/10/2020 11:25

Raspberry jam is amazing in porridge (but only as a treat...)

longtompot · 16/10/2020 11:29

Salt in the porridge with milk. Milk moat around it in the bowl topped with dark brown sugar.

Out of honey and golden syrup I think I'd prefer the golden syrup.

M0rT · 16/10/2020 11:34

Cream and honey is absolutely delicious, tastes more like dessert than breakfast

oldwhyno · 16/10/2020 11:51

I bet mincemeat is good, I'm going to try that. And rasberry jam is also good.

@CleverCatty if you want to "educate" your DM back, hit her with brown sugar, double cream and a nip of single malt...

TurquoiseDragon · 16/10/2020 11:57

I like both golden syrup and honey on porridge, just not together.

But for preference I'll have cinnamon, and lots of it.

DD likes raspberry jam. She also prefers to cook it in a pan and not the microwave.

maamalady · 16/10/2020 12:04

Golden syrup on porridge is a wonderful winter breakfast. Although I love honey, for some reason I'm not fond of it on porridge

Grin LOL.

oldwhyno - basically DM has a few health conditions (acid reflux etc) so she can't or won't or rarely has - double cream or alcohol.

I am happy to try what she won't try though!

It's got to be brown sugar!!! Light soft brown. Mmmmmm...

evilgiraffe - I don't mind honey on porridge but for some reason much prefer golden syrup.

My teenage breakfast of choice was crunchy nut cornflakes, mixed fruit (the one with peel), milk and a healthy glug of golden syrup. I must've needed the sweetness then though and I was very slim (7 stone and under from 12 onwards LOL). Grin
