How much can you hear your neighbours?

Right hand side -
Hairdryer
Plugs being plugged in
Occasional arguments
Teenage daughter who takes every opportunity to sing very loudly, and not well.

Left hand side -
Heart radio from 8.30am EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. The muffled bass of a DJ talking shit is driving me insane
Children who class screaming as a hobby
Mum who classes loud Facetimes as a hobby. General loud everything. I think she actually wants everyone to hear her inane chat.

(I'm also very aware that they can probably hear us but we're generally quite boring and quiet).

Not much really to be honest, the occasional barney between LHS. The way the houses are laid out our hall and staircase adjoins theirs so no actual lived in rooms join.

RHS we do directly join living and dining room and upstairs bedroom and bathroom. We can hear their bath or shower running if in the bathroom at the the same time. They have a baby and we occasionally here her cry but not much at all.

They probably hear my two far much more...

SabrinaSalem · 16/10/2020 09:36

Mid- terrace, built 2010ish. One side we hear the scrape of their dining chairs being moved, otherwise nothing. Other side nothing but they've a baby due in a few weeks so we'll see how that changes!

Sound insulation inside our house (i.e. between floors) is very poor compared to older houses I've lived in, that might be the trade-off.

decoraters · 16/10/2020 09:40

We hear no general noise day to day but one side plays an electric guitar so when the amp is turned up we hear that.

My neighbour said chair scraping was the only thing he heard from us (wooden chairs on tile floor) so I got some of those felt sticky pads. They are a game changer. You could pop some through your neighbours door!

60s Ex-council house in Scotland. We hear virtually nothing from inside the neighbours except if they do DIY and sometimes if they run up and down the stairs. The gardens are tiny though so we hear the kids 3 doors down jumping on the trampoline and screaching.

Our newish NDNs have a habit of standing right next to the fence when they smoke, very close to our living room window, which is a bit disconcerting if we make eye contact, so I've put a hanging basket and some dangly ornaments (which I normally hate) just to screen it a bit in the corner where they stand. We can also smell the smoke in the bedroom as we usually have the window open.

Side 1 (half joined): Is rented and we're soon the get new neighbours. We normally only here them running up and down the stairs.

Side 2 (fully joined): We hear their front door slamming and one window squeaks when it's opened. We also hear them vacuuming and their washing machine.

Our houses are 60's builds and they're not too bad for sound. We are also quite lucky with our neighbours.

boredwithmylastusername · 16/10/2020 11:47

Both sides are new around 8m to a year and are doing work to their gardens and properties , it's workmen chatting, using tools and their radios on, I can live with it as it means they are keen to have a nice property and live to a certain standard plus it doesn't go on for ever
When it's just the neighbours in they are pretty quiet, occasional chatting in the back garden

TurquoiseDragon · 16/10/2020 12:09

I don't hear much at all. Benefit of an alley between me and one side (she's so nice), and on the other side, my small hallway is between me and them, plus the stairs are on that side. I also think these houses were pretty well built (over 100 years old).

BinkyBoinky · 16/10/2020 15:40

Left side - nothing but the occasional argument
Right side - loud shitty dance music, drunken singing – or worse, drunken rapping - and just generally loud talk. And that's just during the day.

WooMaWang · 16/10/2020 15:47

Our neighbours on either side are much older than us. The ones on our right seem to be quite deaf.

From the right we hear MrsNeighbour practising the saxophone every day (she’s trying but never seems to get any better, bless her) and also the radio that she listens to loudly in the kitchen. She seems to use their box room as a nattering to friends on zoom room these days, so DH hears the whole thing while he’s working in our box room.

On the other side we hear their tv and their dog barking sometimes.

They both claim never to hear our baby crying (the ones on the left absolutely must hear him sometimes). And they’ll hear the DSC being very loud, fighting and screaming, while DH fails to tell them to shut up. And my DS2 talking crap to his friends as they online game (plus me telling him to stop bloody shouting or I’m turning the WiFi off).

WitsEnding · 16/10/2020 15:51

1920s terrace, average quality build.
One side - the occasional short argument - about once a month
Other side - loud voices every few months, may or may not be television.

My house is very quiet so I’m not covering any noise there might be - love my neighbours and hope they stay!

fourquenelles · 16/10/2020 15:57

Left hand side works from home in room next to my front room so I hear her on the phone. Also hear her small boy when he wakes and cries in the night. She hears my dogs barking (intermittently) when I do go out (rarely) and messages me. Strange that every time I come home it is completely silent. She'll be getting her own back soon as there is another baby due Grin
Right hand side only when they are scraping wall paper on the wall next to my hall. Then it sounds like they are in my house. Otherwise the occasional plug going in a socket but nothing else.

trebletheclef · 16/10/2020 16:07

Old 1870s house. Once heard a previous owner of the left hand side having sex. Headboard banging against our wall woke me up and I only worked out what it was when I heard her making 'mewing' noises. Twice this happened. I was trying to work out what to say if it happened a third time when she, perhaps rather inevitably, got pregnant and sold up and moved all within a year. I have heard the new owner sneeze once or twice, and am well aware that that means he can hear us sneezing/coughing.

Other side I sometimes hear when he phones for a taxi and speaks loudly, but that's all. Oh, and I hear him draw his curtains in the morning. Whoosh!

Phrowzunn · 16/10/2020 16:16

We are end-terrace but we can hear our NDNs watching TV so loud in the evening that I know what they are watching. Can hear the theme tune of Stranger Things or can hear exactly where they are in Frozen 2. Why are grown people watching Frozen 2 ear-splittingly loud at 1am? I do not know. But we are moving in four weeks and I am sooooo excited to be detached I can’t tell you!!

Londonnight · 16/10/2020 16:20

Mid terrace, rarely hear neighbours either side. Occasional door banging, but nothing else. Left to me have 3 children too, never hear them either.

AudTheDeepMinded · 16/10/2020 16:25

Right. Youngish couple, no kids. Hardly ever hear them. Once a serious row quite late at night with some banging and shouting and the front door going, but usually just the odd slight thud and once or twice a hint of TV. Also a birthday party once with some very bad singing! Hear their takeaway arrive of a weekend!
Left. Mature lady. Never hear her in the house, but she does call her cat in at the back door at stupid o'clock some mornings. She also had some 1960s/70s middle of the road pop music on quite loud with the back door open one day in the summer, which she sang along to badly. Think she'd been on the gin and was enjoying a trip down memory lane!
Once lived in a house where you could hear next door fart!

ProfYaffle · 16/10/2020 16:26

The way the sound carries in our row is really odd.

On one side we only hear one light switch - none of the others. No conversation but the occasional loud sneeze. Their music really carries when they have guests over though and their teenage son is a little shit when it comes to super loud music which can be deafening.

Other side - nothing except an other worldly noise from their plumbing but only in our bathroom even though it's not actually connected to them. Confused

Sistedtwister · 16/10/2020 16:36

1870's terrace. Walls are thick but no cavity so sounds travel through. To the left hear nothing. To the right dog howling and to the back we hear them singing hyms. Sounds travel weirdly though.
I had a complaint from the back neighbours about my dog howling so I popped around to see them with my silent dog whilst the dog next door was howling. They were quite non-plussed and it did indeed sound like it was coming from our house

2pinkginsplease · 16/10/2020 16:38

Mid terrace here. All we can hear is their front door closing if its slammed other than that no noise.

MillieVanilla · 16/10/2020 16:46

One side used to be students, that was hell.
Now we have a family who are quiet but have just put a TV in the bedroom next to mine upstairs which they seem to watch from 9pm to 1am. It's right against the wall so like trying to sleep with a TV next to me. Not great but they're so lovely the rest of the time but I will end up having to gently ask them to move it away from the wall.
Other side is split in two. Downstairs, not a noise, they seem to work constantly and leave around 6.30am (not loudly but can hear their van) and they don't come home until gone 9pm. They're away weekends.
The upstairs one we have nicknamed Moaning Myrtle. She cannot sing but clearly thinks she is blessed with the singing ability of Barbara Streisand and Bette Midler. She has all the windows open for maximum ear splitting annoyance audience levels. I thought the girl who sang Dance Monkey had a dodgy voice, she sounds like an angel compared to Myrtle. She also cannot seem to have a phone convo without having it on speaker.
She's so bloody annoying and I wish she would move out but no such luck. I'm at least hopeful that the colder weather will at least see her close the damn windows
There was workmen working opposite in the summer and they were cracking up at her singing. Was concerned they'd fall off their scaffolding at one point they were laughing so hard.

Heatherjayne1972 · 16/10/2020 18:26

Mid terrace
Left side - ever changing number of children whose favourite game is running round and round the lounge and then up and down the stairs

Other side grumpy single man spends a lot of time at work presumably but I often hear him sneezing
So could be worse.

Beautyoftheirdreams · 16/10/2020 18:30

Very little. The odd argument if it's particularly loud. Baby crying at night but not often. I know they hear our toddler if he's upset in the night but other than that, they reassure me they can't hear us

Alicatz66 · 16/10/2020 18:30

I live in a Victorian terrace ... never hear a thing !

Ronniesgirl · 16/10/2020 18:33

Left hand side I hear them running up and down stairs, singing in the shower and doing DIY. Right hand side nothing as the old guy takes care of his girlfriend so stays with her only popping in one day a week.
They can hear my cats doing somersaults down the stairs and generally crashing about so swings in roundabouts!
Only time I get annoyed is when they start messing about in their bathroom as I’m trying to fall asleep. I start work at 6am so like to fall sleep early.
