How much can you hear your neighbours?

Right hand side -
Hairdryer
Plugs being plugged in
Occasional arguments
Teenage daughter who takes every opportunity to sing very loudly, and not well.

Left hand side -
Heart radio from 8.30am EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. The muffled bass of a DJ talking shit is driving me insane
Children who class screaming as a hobby
Mum who classes loud Facetimes as a hobby. General loud everything. I think she actually wants everyone to hear her inane chat.

(I'm also very aware that they can probably hear us but we're generally quite boring and quiet).

I've lived in three mid-terraces.
In the Victorian ones we heard really hardly anything.
In the Georgian one you can hear a little downstairs but rather more upstairs - coughing or sneezing from next door, and anything over-enthusiastic in the bedroom...

WonderMoon · 15/10/2020 22:21

Lived in a middle terrace for years - the only noise I heard occasionally from one neighbour was when he ran up the stairs, only heard that when I was in my bedroom and not that loud.
Sometimes I'd hear their dogs barking but again it wasn't that bad. Never heard either neighbours music, TV, banging doors etc. The walls were insulated well.

stclair · 15/10/2020 22:21

On the left can hear when they do a wee in the loo under the stairs. Which makes me worry that they on the right can hear me when I do a wee!

ChrisOnTheBeach · 15/10/2020 22:23

Used to some years ago, in a Victorian terrace. Never again. People one side had the TV very loud, and played the piano, people the other side had 3 kids and we heard the thud thud thud of the little brats running up and down the stairs! 2 years we tolerated it.

Hell will freeze over before I ever live in one again. Noise from both sides, no way of getting to the back garden without going through the house, having the wheelie bins by the front window, tiny front garden, noise from both sides.

No offence to anyone, and I am sure some people are happy in theirs, but I would rather live in a caravan than live in a mid terraced house again. Once bitten.........

Ours was like the one on that pic. ^ I am sure that some others are fine, but we weren't really happy in ours.

Victorian, mid terrace dweller here. We hear nothing - the walls must be extremely thick.

user27378 · 15/10/2020 22:31

Left side I can hear their landline ringing, often very late at night. Lots and lots of arguing and fighting, but in a language I don't understand, one of the kids is autistic and regularly has meltdowns or sounds like he's been locked in his room and bangs on the wall. One of them has a vocal tic or stim.

Right side, the dad is an alcoholic chain smoker so he seems to be permanently sat on their back step, and I hear him open and scrunch up large cans of Fosters regularly. He often plays shit music like Celine Dion. Talks on speaker phone quite often but in another language I don't understand. They got a very small dog last year and we're worried it was noisy but when it was a puppy we could barely hear it's bark so reassured them it was fine. Now its yap is very clear to hear, but only when it's outside.

Tbh, out of all of this the only thing that bothers me is the right side man's smokers cough, it makes me feel physically sick to hear it. I think he probably has COPD because sometimes it's worse than others and really starts to bother me. And left side family really annoy me when they argue in the street outside the house as it's much louder, and most nights they arrive home from their restaurant or family very late, sometime between midnight and 3am, and make zero effort to keep noise down, keeping engines running, slamming car door, talking loudly etc.

The rest I don't mind at all and the neighbours are friendly and polite to us. I would prefer to put up with some noise from neighbours than worry that I'm making too much noise tbh (I have 3 noisy kids, my 7 year old in particular is a wailer).

Leflic · 15/10/2020 22:31

I can hear weeding too from both sides. One has a downstairs loo next to the living room and the other sides downstairs loo reverberates up my bedroom.
The walls between us are good but the floors between up and downstairs are the problem.

user27378 · 15/10/2020 22:33

I'm also in a Victorian mid terrace. Tbh if it weren't for the smoker guy being outside his house we wouldn't hear them. The other side are just REALLY loud in general.

fairydustandpixies · 15/10/2020 22:33

I live in a 200yr old terrace. One side I can hear their lounge curtains opening in the morning. The other side I hear the vacuum occasionally. That's it.

Lellochip · 15/10/2020 22:33

RHS - banging toddler, shouting mum. Once in a blue moon the crying baby, surprised how little I hear her.

LHS - Laughing or 'Oh-my-God'ing - makes me smile. Always sound like they're having fun or a good gossip! Apart from that, the only other place I hear them is in the bathroom - theirs and mine obviously share the wall, and it sounds like they're in there with me sometimes. Blush

Sunnydayhere · 15/10/2020 22:34

Never mind the sounds its the smells.

Daughter no.1 has to contend with occasional cannabis smokers on either sideout on their balconies and the house next but 1 which may have been converted into a cannabis farm.

mrsbyers · 15/10/2020 22:35

My neighbour works from home now and so do I - she has her phone set so it’s beeps everytime she presses a number and I assume her job entails making a lot of calls as it’s pretty constant

FizzyPink · 15/10/2020 22:36

We’ve been debating the pros and cons of buying a terrace recently as it’s obviously a lot cheaper. You’ve all just convinced me not to Grin

Just talking about this. Neighbours on right, nothing for 23 hours a day; perfect neighbours. Between 5.15am and 6.15 their alarm goes off and is very loud. Sound is a constant. Why? Absolutely no idea. They both leave for work at the same time I do. Trying think about the positives of the other 23 hours but patience is wearing little thin.

vanillandhoney · 15/10/2020 22:37

Pretty much nothing unless the windows are open. The odd door slam maybe but otherwise it's pretty quiet.

We have an old retired chap on one side and students on the other.

DeathMetalMum · 15/10/2020 22:37

End terrace so one side only. Occasional screeching form the mum at the kids to get thing done. Kids arguing, screaming and shouting at each other, teen girl who has complete meltdowns every so often. Phone ringing and plug switches. People having sex.
When the adults go out the teen has all of her friends round and they make a lot of noise and then more noise at 1am when the adults return. Usually around once a month or more often.

Surprisingly they are on the whole quieter than our previous neighbor's. I used to hear the lady who lived next door screaming and shouting with added swearing almost all day. Her kids were really young as well. Sad

WearyandBleary · 15/10/2020 22:37

1960s terrace. Neighbours both retired couples. I can hear their noise at night eg light switches and radio but in the day only
Loud voices and hoover.

I like my neighbours and I like the sounds of them living either side. :)

Nat6999 · 15/10/2020 22:40

I lived in a mid terrace as a child, built between the wars, never heard anything, could make as much noise as we wanted. My mum lives in a semi built by the same builder, can hear everything next door.

penpotted · 15/10/2020 22:41

New-ish house. I hear the left side closing the front door (they slam it!) and, if I'm in bed, the noise of their water pipes when they have their regular 10.30pm wee before bed. Literally nothing else.

StanfordPines · 15/10/2020 22:42

My last house was a tiny tiny mid terrace.
One side we had a little old lady who lived on her own. We never heard a sound except first thing in the morning when she and I would clearly get up at the same time because I’d hear her having a wee the same time as me.
The other side was a single man. Fairly quiet most of the time but he was a northern soul DJ and every so often he would test out records at full volume. We got on really well so we tolerated it. He was away a lot so it wasn’t that often.
After he moved out a couple moved in and we realised how lucky we had been with two single neighbours. With the couple we could hear both side of the telephone conversations!

Plussizejumpsuit · 15/10/2020 22:42

Very little. Our neighbours are lovely. They have young kids so we occasionally hear bits of kid noise, laughter, crying, playing. But it's just odd bits of the noise from these things rather than hearing loads of the full on cry. If this makes sense?

I can hear the stairs being used but it's quiet. I hear nothing from the other side. But it's a woman in her 40s on her own. She's as lso lovely. Feel very lucky with neighbours as I've had some fucking awful ones.

Littlepond · 15/10/2020 22:43

Left: coughing, occasionally v loud TV, very occasionally someone ringing the doorbell repeatedly at midnight shouting the chaps name. (Happened 3 times in 2 years)

Right: kids going up and down stairs. Pipes. And at the moment, DIY stuff.

It’s generally really quiet where I live even though it’s mid terrace. I love my house!

Toseland · 15/10/2020 22:49

House built 1901 - very quiet here - occasionally left: Gentle singing and laughter, right: tumble dryer at 6am. I love the warmth of being sandwiched between 2 others.

mnahmnah · 15/10/2020 22:50

On one side it’s pretty quiet, save for the yapping dogs. The other side is like the bloody Eurovision Song Contest on acid with added shouty debating chats all night. Grrr.

Plussizejumpsuit · 15/10/2020 22:51

Oh it's victoriana on 3 floors (not fancy 2 rooms on each) so think we got lucky with a thick walled Victorian house. But tbh the areas of original plaster feel like they're made of biscuits. But maybe still good for sound insulation?
