How much can you hear your neighbours?

Right hand side -
Hairdryer
Plugs being plugged in
Occasional arguments
Teenage daughter who takes every opportunity to sing very loudly, and not well.

Left hand side -
Heart radio from 8.30am EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. The muffled bass of a DJ talking shit is driving me insane
Children who class screaming as a hobby
Mum who classes loud Facetimes as a hobby. General loud everything. I think she actually wants everyone to hear her inane chat.

(I'm also very aware that they can probably hear us but we're generally quite boring and quiet).

Sorry. Got carried away just moaning Grin I think it’s them being loud, rather than the walls being thin as such. 1900 built.

Nsky · 15/10/2020 22:52

My neighbour singing, other side nothing!
Used to have neighbours run up and downstairs ( 1 bed ) and slam doors, I said I could repeat famous like pressing on their doorbell at 4.30am they seemed shocked, luckily moved

WearyandBleary · 15/10/2020 22:54

It really depends on your neighbours, but doesn’t anywhere?!

I feel smug in a terrace. :)

ConfusedcomMum · 15/10/2020 22:54

Hardly anything but then I'm partially deaf and have very loud DCs unfortunately. I once apologised to my NDN about my colic baby crying/screaming all night and she said she could hardly hear a thing from our house Confused!

WearyandBleary · 15/10/2020 22:54

*SNUG lol

AntiHop · 15/10/2020 22:57

Voices, only when raised. Music, tv, toddler crying, cupboard doors. We are super quiet when we have sex as we really don't want the neighbours to hear!

mirandatempestuous · 15/10/2020 22:59

New build with insulated walls. I can't hear a single peep from either side. In fact whole world is silent when the windows are closed - even though we are in central London. It's a bit strange.

Pinkmagic1 · 15/10/2020 22:59

One side, absolutely nothing. She is an older single lady and as quiet as a mouse. The other side I hear the dog barking and the women shouting at the kids.

ainsisoisje · 15/10/2020 23:15

Sometimes noise from one sides kitchen if they loudly slam cupboards...and not much else on either side although bizarrely I can hear the others plug socket being turned on and off. Can hear dogs from behind as we are back to back.

TiddyTid · 15/10/2020 23:17

Mid terrace 400 yr old cottage. Hear very little as walls are so thick.

StillDumDeDumming · 15/10/2020 23:20

I don’t want to jinx it but on my left almost silent student house!! Can hear plugs, the front door and stairs but that is it.

On the right annoying formula 1 type driving game lots from professional 30s couple.

narcdad45 · 15/10/2020 23:21

Nothing either side, that's due to one side being tunnel linked and the other side has our hallway wall linked to next doors hall wall so very limited noise.

Dramalady52 · 16/10/2020 00:19

1970s terrace, can hear very little from either side, so walls must be reasonably thick. I'm lucky in that everyone in the row are 50s-60s with no small kids

JorisBonson · 16/10/2020 06:48

It's 6.45am. I can hear left hand side mum have a very loud phone conversation (who speaks on the phone this early??) while the kid again screams and kicks my wall.

One side: not a lot, occasionally hear her loudly chopping, think she’s batch cooking, otherwise nothing.
Other side: when the kids were small there was a lot of shouting, now we don’t hear a fat lot
We are probably the noisy ones with two toddlers tbh!

user1471462428 · 16/10/2020 08:12

17 year old mid terrace. Left side extremely loud door slamming, she knows it’s broken but won’t replace it. Teenage son jumps down the last stairs which wakes me, slam drawers and chops loudly. However, she is a huge improvement on the drunk lady who lived there previously and used to smash about till the early hours. Right side lady with teenagers, occasional loud music and arguing. Some slamming doors. I’m looking at detached houses Grin

ExclamationPerfume · 16/10/2020 08:14

One side an old man. He smokes like a trooper and coughs his guts up regularly. TV on very loud.

Other side currently empty. We did have a delightful neighbour for 18 months who made our lives hell. Loud performance sex, parties until 5am, shouting at her baby, arguments in the street. We celebrated when she left.

StCharlotte · 16/10/2020 08:26

Left hand side - nothing. We lived away for a decade and missed their teenager's loudest years.

Right hand side - occasional going up stairs. A bit of kitchen clattering. They have young adult children and the daughter is highly strung shall we say so we hear occasional screaming meltdowns.

They could hear our dog barking which was mercifully rare.

Their predecessors were heavily into techno and dance music (we couldn't hear it thank god). They were admiring my choice of music one day as they could hear the beat from their hallway. They were disgusted when I told them it was three Eurovision CDs on shuffle Grin

Didlum · 16/10/2020 08:29

End of terrace. Victorian two up two down. Had an.older couple, then a family with teenager, child and baby. Don't hear anything day to day. Occasionally have heard the mum shout, which she will have heard from me occasionally too, although not now they are teenagers

Deathraystare · 16/10/2020 08:41

Not mid terrace but shared flat. I used to not hear the guy next to me but he has left now. I hear the guy next door chatting on phone/skype whatever. He also has the occasional femal e friend around . I can hear them chatting at 3am. Not good if I do the early shift. Mind you I SNORE so I cannot really say anything. The guy next to him has his door slightly open so can hear him on computer. He also leaves the loo door open so I can really hear the fan going.

Min you I am up about every two hours for the loo so cannot complain about noises. The guy in the next flat (but room next to me) seems to have gone. He used to scream joyfully down the phone to someone in his own language.

Then of course we have the outside noises - sirens, helicopters, giggling, shreiking girls walking up to the flats down the road, and of course Mr Fox making himself heard too!

TheOrigRights · 16/10/2020 09:07

We hear not normal day to day stuff through the walls, only if they're doing DIY or something do we hear.

I can hear my neighbour having sex if I am in the garden, but not through the walls thankfully.

We did have a lad once who had his massive TV against the party wall, but after a few complaints from us he moved it to the other side where there is no adjoining wall.

I guess I subconsciously know their comings and goings as I can hear the front door being locked or the back gate being opened and bins being moved, but nothing bothersome at all. In fact when one side was a very elderly woman with reduced mobility I could just tell if something was awry. It's the sort of noise you don't notice, like getting used to plane noise if you live under the flight path. You only notice it when it's NOT there.

ShopTattsyrup · 16/10/2020 09:10

Left - Elderly lady who makes absolutely no sound. If I didn't see her occasionally in her kitchen from my garden I would think she was dead.
Right - Middle Aged couple with daughter in her 20s. The one creaky step on their stairs if they're going up them and occasionally their dog barking, but I'm not sure if that's when their back door is open in the kitchen while cooking. He is quite hard of hearing so we very very occasionally hear "what?!" Being shouted in reply to something Grin

nancybotwinbloom · 16/10/2020 09:25

Left my elderly neighbor and he sings all the old songs I hear him all the time he's lovely.

Right an older couple than me hoovering and their grandkids sometimes.

movingonup20 · 16/10/2020 09:32

I'm currently listening to our male neighbour yelling at his partner, this goes on most the morning, after lunch I think he must fall asleep, there's then usually two way yelling around tea time (if the doors are open often accompanied by burning smells!) I'm actually worried for her. Can't here other side, young couple no kids

MsEllany · 16/10/2020 09:32

Right side - occasional football celebrations and the phone ringing (think they’ve got a new one as haven’t heard it before a couple of weeks ago!). The occasional plug being pushed in. That’s about it.

Left side have just moved out but we only ever heard the dog, and that was because they left it outside to cry all the time Sad
