DH is keen so I was thinking of it as a Christmas present. Has anyone done this and which would you recommend please?

Yes. AncestryUK is brilliant.

KitchenConfidential · 15/10/2020 11:23

No because selling my genetic material to corporate companies seems insane and what they can actually tell you is not actually that accurate

Yes. It's brilliant. Whilst the country origins can be questionable, the relatives it brings up are not.

If you want it it's £55 until midnight.

I have done the Ancestry one. I have been researching my family tree for a while and it confirmed that what I had found was correct. Also, the shared results put in me in touch with previously unknown relatives who have been happy to share info and photos, etc. so worth doing.

Houseplantmad · 15/10/2020 17:13

Thanks all. I didn't know they could put you in touch - do the relatives get your details too?

My sister has done it and it's really interesting!

Whatwouldnanado · 15/10/2020 19:02

It's very good. There is a facility on the Ancestry website to send/receive messages. Thinking of getting the same for my DH.

evenmoreforthemoor · 15/10/2020 19:02

Yes and my Dh got his results back today which say he is a healthy carrier of a genetic illness. Which means my kids will need testing when older and want to have children. Careful what Pandora's box you open. Some people might want to know this info - others might not. Just make sure you're prepped for whatever may come up...

On the other hand its really interesting with regards to where you come from but mine keeps changing every time they have an update - I was a quarter Irish until the last update and now am 1% Irish. It's not massively accurate...

SprogletsMum · 15/10/2020 19:03

My mum found her biological dad doing this plus a load of siblings and cousins etc our family quadrupled in size over night.

Keep in mind that finding relatives does not always lead to a happy ending. Trust me, I know. You have to be prepared for the good, the bad, and the ugly.

My Ancestry DNA test led to finding the parent of an illegitimate ancestor with a great degree of certainty. I also did Living DNA which is better for UK ancestry as it has the database from the People of the British Isles Study. I found the ancestry analysis accorded 100% with what I know to be true.

Can I ask how you get that price? The website says £55 and then says £79 plus shipping and it ends up at £89 delivered
IKEA888 · 15/10/2020 20:16

yes v stupidly I did it.
I thought it only gave the ethnicity estimate..
I'm adopted and it opened a can of worms luckily no major upset

lakesidewinter · 15/10/2020 20:17

Yes. It was very interesting and I've had contact from several more distant cousins throughout the world.

FauxFurCoatAndBigKnickers · 15/10/2020 20:24

I did the Ancestry one and it was extremely accurate in country origins and is continuously updated as more people do it.

Through doing it, I was able to arrange for a 89 year old man (a 2nd cousin who was adopted as a baby) to finally see what his mother looked like via a photo and to make contact with her family. I’m very glad to have done it for that reason alone.

FelicityPike · 15/10/2020 20:28

I’ve asked for it from Santa.
