We've polished off our hotel breakfasts, flocked to the beaches and eaten out to help out with Rishi. Now the D-Day style floatilla of Anti-Dementor boats weather the stormy seas of tiers 1, 2 and 3 and support each other through the calls for lockdown.

Hold on tight and get those bouyancy aids on...

I'm Barnsley so in the South Yorkshire lockdown to tier 3. Won't make a jot of difference to me. It's a month since I saw anyone face to face. Nearest I have been to anyone was the click and collect guy (2m+) and the Amazon delivery guy, waving from the end of the drive.

I think the reason for the tier system was Rishi vetoing the lockdown, so they are doing it through the back door.

My kids aren't dementorish but all my friends and family, retired, comfortably off and with gardens etc. are all in agreement that lockdown is the only way. Even my Melbourne brother, where the situation is even more ridiculous (Although they break rules and visit their daughter's family - within the 5km boundary)

@NeedWineNow
If you are on a laptop, you can hide the topic by clicking on the down arrow to the right of 'Talk', you then get options that include 'customise' you can block topics there.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 21/10/2020 11:36

Are dementors the sort of people who would secretly love to be traffic wardens but are too chicken?

Until recently, they were left in charge of stationery cupboards and insurance compliance projects to keep them from doing any real harm. They're feeling empowered now and it's going to be hard to stop them.

NastyBlouse · 21/10/2020 11:49

I think for some people, passing on their own fear and horror to others is a way of reminding themselves that they're not imagining the whole thing.

Also, people can't remain under stress and pressure forever. There has to be a fart pressure valve. For some, it's diversionary stuff. But for others, I think releasing the steam happens in the form of 'sharing' the bad news. (My grandmother used to be like this.)

I think a kind of attempt at psychological levelling goes on. Some people find it really difficult to accept that others have less fear than they do. 'It would be alright,' they think (subconsciously), 'if everyone else was as scared as I am.' So off they go, spreading the fear in order to accomplish this. I don't think it's malicious, in most cases. (Although in some it is.)

rosettesforjill · 21/10/2020 11:55

I hid the Covid boards a long time ago but I'm Manchester born and bred (though currently enduring living in London due to DH's work) and I will fight anyone who disrespects the city

I've just booked in 16 hours of Teams software demos over the next week and I can already feel my soul departing my body. Fucking Teams.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 21/10/2020 11:59

I think a lot of people like to think that they're not going to catch it because they're doing all the right things.

But then when they see other people not following their ( stringent imaginary) rules, they get jealous and fomo kicks in and their controlling tendencies come out.

MaxNormal · 21/10/2020 12:03

Oh lord, that was my mother to a T. When we went to visit, she'd have the pre-breakfast horror story all lined up and ready to go every morning. Plus various zingers so when everyone was having a fun, relaxed time she'd take the stage with some horrific tale of rape/abduction/murder/disease/accident. As she lived in Africa, she had a large pool of stories to choose from too.

MaxNormal · 21/10/2020 12:05

I think a lot of people like to think that they're not going to catch it because they're doing all the right things.

I wonder if it's the same as people who judge women who are sexually assaulted because they were drunk, trusted a stranger, walked home alone, dressed skimpily etc? I always thought was to some degree fear-driven and a way of trying to believe it would never happen to them as long as they were "virtuous" and did all the right things.
Of course, a hefty dose of misogyny does come into play as well.

TabbyStar · 21/10/2020 12:18

My DM is really anxious about it and keeps saying the same things over and over again despite me trying to (a) talk about what the actual evidence says; and (b) point out that we don't agree about this. She's not really got anyone else to talk to about it, she's very risk averse, and to be fair it stands a good chance of it being serious for her if she gets it given she's 87 and with COPD, but I cannot take on all her anxiety as well as everything I have to deal with without me cracking, though I do feel sympathy for her.

I think I'm fortunate though in that I have a few friends who are definitely ADs!

Thanksitsgotpockets · 21/10/2020 12:20

I've heard it lots in parenting and come out as very judgy behaviour. That would never happen to my child because I do xyz... So they can reassure themselves that it happened for a reason and a parent that does the right things will avoid those reasons and that being bloody unlucky never comes into it.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 21/10/2020 12:28

That sound about right to me - though I've seen that around other illnesses as well.

I'm finding it increasingly hard to find the little fun things - even finding stuff we all want to watch on TV seems hard - currently enjoying and rapidly going through netflick's A series of unfortunate events, Discovery new episode on Friday and Bake off Tuesday and that's it I'm sure there's usually more - though it could be the kids ages as well now.

I think I'll have to look again at audible - it says I can share content with the linked chidlren's accounts though last time I tried they suddenly decided it wasn't possible - plus I think Alexa can play them as well.

Worldgonecrazy · 21/10/2020 12:45

Ha ha quick update from Rhodes. We are booked with Solmar villas through Jet2 and whoever owns our villa hasn’t paid the electricity bill so we have been cut off!! Thought it was a power cut until we spotted no one else had lost owner and did some investigation!! I somehow don’t think it will be a quick fix!!

Reedwarbler · 21/10/2020 12:46

I was driving slowly through a local village in the pouring rain this morning. There were 2 young women standing on the pavement tightly embraced in a hug. They were not smiling or talking, just holding on to each other for grim death. No one else around, and they did not move the entire time they were in my view. Just 2 people needing human contact and comfort. It made me cry, which made me realise how close to the edge I am.

justasking111 · 21/10/2020 13:02

SOS need your help, OH gone all dementor again we had grandkids for a sleepover because dad had to go into hospital. He says we cannot do this again, 3 and 5 year olds are super spreaders, tried to say they do not catch it in the first place. I need evidence though. I felt like saying well I will move in with them then, you can isolate alone in comfort... On the edge here guys.

Worldgonecrazy · 21/10/2020 13:13

@justasking111

Hopefully common sense will prevail. Ask him to provide peer reviewed evidence!

WouldBeGood · 21/10/2020 13:49

@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath you can download audible books onto another phone or device by logging into your account on it, though Alexa won’t play it then .

WouldBeGood · 21/10/2020 13:50

@Worldgonecrazy oh no!!! Maybe the dementors have cursed you..?

NeedWineNow · 21/10/2020 13:53

@IAintentDead. Thanks I'll give that a go.

I’m sorry you’re feeling this way.

I’m glad friends are still hugging.

ooh thanks - phone might well work better for the kids.

I think I'll almost certainly take the free trail and play around with it - I should get two free books as a prime member.

justasking111 · 21/10/2020 14:12

It gets worse with OH karndean due to be laid in hall, so phoned shop who said they are still seeking clarification with cardiff as to whether they can enter homes getting the runaround. OH says cheerily well we will go out for the day, its a two!! day job. We are not allowed out for two whole days where the fuck are we allowed to go all day for two days anyway. Not family he has made that clear to me.

Reedwarbler · 21/10/2020 14:19

@AcornAutumn Thank you. Kind words mean a lot.

Reedwarbler · 21/10/2020 14:24

@justasking111 I thought tradesman were allowed in?(even in Wales) You don't have to be in the same room as them, but I wouldn't want to go out as there are usually queries about something when people are working in your home. We had a new woodburner fitted the other week - no problem.

Evenstar · 21/10/2020 14:27

@Reedwarbler Brew and 💐 for you. I am feeling much worse today, the weather is awful here and that definitely doesn’t help.

Littlebelina · 21/10/2020 14:52

You know the saying "there is no such thing as bad weather just inadequate clothing"? Well it's Bullshit. Sacked off our half term outside activity and retreated back home. Luckily looks ok here for rest of week but not looking forward to winter spent mainly outside
