Can I escape from Apple?! Help!

Ugh. I already knew Apple products are overpriced but I liked them for their aesthetics/design and how easy they are to use. I was eagerly awaiting the launch of the iPhone 12 as I'm currently using a 7 Plus and had decided to treat myself.

However.

I've just read that they're not including the plug part of the charger, for "environmental" reasons. Initially I thought, "no problem, I've got millions of the bloody things" . . . until I read further and discovered that the charging cable will be lightning connector at the phone end and USB-C at the plug end, which means it won't work with all my existing plugs (which are USB).

Having to buy a USB-C plug for a product that already costs over £1000 feels like the final kick in the teeth from Apple. It makes me want to buy a different phone . . . except that I have the entire eco-system. Apple Watch. Airpods. iPad Pro.

Am I trapped? Or will my Apple Watch and AirPods work with an android phone? And which phone should I get? I want a really good camera - that's probably the priority.

I'm about to end a ten-year relationship Grin

Aren't they doing a plug you can buy with the phone for £19?

Rockbird · 14/10/2020 17:59

Or failing that just use a normal usb. It will still work, it'll just be a bit slower to charge.

Rockbird · 14/10/2020 18:00

Your watch won't work with an android phone. Your AirPods will.

CatPeach · 14/10/2020 18:00

Why dont you see if the prices drop on the other models? I just got an iPhone 11 and am so pleased with it!

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 14/10/2020 18:01

I think that's the point. They suck you in... until you're trapped. Like a fly in a pitcher plant. Grin

I bought my first iPhone last year. Second hand. I'm already eyeing up ipads... Hmm

RedPandaFluff · 14/10/2020 18:05

They are, @NightOwl19, but it renders their "environmental" reasons absolute bollocks - more packaging, more shipping . . .

And I feel a bit entitled to a £19 charger with my £1100 phone Angry

I wasn't sure if the old USB cables would work with it - if they do, then that's something, I suppose.

It's definitely a principle thing. I just feel like they're taking us for mugs . . .

Get an 11 when the price inevitably drops and then over the next couple of years when the watch / AirPods need replacing replace them with devices that work better with android. Ease yourself out of the cult slowly 😉

safariboot · 14/10/2020 18:07

USB C is the future anyway. A lot of Android phones and other devices use it now - and also often ship with just a USB cable and no wall plug.

yelyah22 · 14/10/2020 18:07

Google Pixels are easy to use, remarkably cheap for good smartphones, look good and have great cameras (or at least my Pixel 3XL does)! I msdee the leap from iPhone a few years ago and I'm so glad I did, I like having so much choice and 'new phone' feeling instead of it being all the same.

I assume airpods work with other phones (surely?!).

I completely agree, if they were keeping the plugs the same and just not including them I could understand there logic but to change it so majority of people will have to buy the plugs anyway seems pointless

I just ended things with apple. My contract ended so I renewed the contracts with android stuff and sold all my apple stuff. I'm really happy with android, it works better for me and what I need and I bloody hated the new ios update, I have no idea who came up with it but it's awful.

RedPandaFluff · 14/10/2020 19:49

Cold turkey, @Whosthatgirlitsjess - sounds scary Grin

Yes, I think the AirPods will work with other phones, but my watch won't.

I forgot I also have the Apple Pencil Hmm

Plugs I have plenty of. What I don’t have is cables that actually last.

Keep eyeing up the 11. I’ve also got a 7+. I think the screen is bigger on the 11 despite the phone being smaller because it goes right to the edges. If I can get a deal with an Apple Watch I’m there.

I also have an iPad and both the dcs have iPhones so I’ve got access to their accounts, find my iPhone etc. Would be bloody annoying to switch now.

amicissimma · 14/10/2020 21:09

I've have this handy set of adaptors. You might find something to get you connected for £11.

Whosthatgirlitsjess · 14/10/2020 21:16

I thought cold turkey was best, I've been an apple user since the beginning basically, I had one if those colourful mac computers even! I just hated the new update, the design, the extras - everything! So I just went for it. Its worked out well luckily!

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 14/10/2020 21:20

Huawei cameras are amazing! My DH has one of the original P30 pro and the photos are incredible, so much better than on my iPhone 7.

My sister has just bought an Oppo and the camera is good.

I’ve used iPhones for years and am planning to break up with Apple in the next month or two when I’m due my upgrade

Rockbird · 16/10/2020 16:49

I'm not bothered about the plug but I'm bloody bothered about the EarPods. I use AirPods for out and about listening but the wired ones for night time listening and they get wrecked so it's always handy to have a spare pair.

fortran · 16/10/2020 17:17

I escaped from Apple two years ago and went for a Samsung galaxy s9 phone. I absolutely love it. The android system isn't difficult to get used to. The Samsung phone is lovely and the camera is far better than my Apple phone.

The people in the store help you to swap your data over if you're unsure. If you need to know how something works, just Google it or go onto YouTube for a tutorial.

I was so scared at first, but I'll never go back to Apple. Their phones are way overpriced for what they are.
