Any recommendations for a fun family board/ card game?

I'd like to treat us at the weekend, now that the nights are drawing in and the fire is being lit.

We have an 8 and 11 year old. They both love games, but prefer shorter and pacier. We've enjoyed fantasy card games like Dragonwood. Any ideas welcome 🙂

Exploding Kittens and Unstable Unicorns.

Throw Throw Burrito is great fun.

For a quieter game, have a look at Mapominoes?

Labyrinth junior

Do you like collaborative games? DH and I have Castle Panic and I think it would work very well for your age kids. You can also play it as a semi-cooperative.

(Mine are younger, but DS aged 5 really likes Castle Panic Junior which is a simplified version).

Dobble is great!

Mariokart monopoly is our favourite family game, its a bit complicated but the children seem to get it more quickly than the adults. (It replicates the Mario games, only very loosely based on monopoly)

Kote · 14/10/2020 07:19

I always recommend Mapominoes - it's a lot of fun and can become very competitive!

R0llonspring · 14/10/2020 07:24

I second Exploding Kittens!

Also "Sushi go party" is great. Visually very appealing to that age group, but you can scale it's difficulty level really well. You pick it up quickly and can move on to more complicated rules/larger hand when you are ready.

Taco cat goat cheese pizza is a card game, fast paced and as long as you want it. New favourite game in our house.
I really like quirkle, cobra paw and blockus.

Never really got exploding kittens!

QuentinWinters · 14/10/2020 07:31

Monopoly deal is a favourite here

Reef, patchwork, forbidden Island

Dobble

Uno

Carcassonne - uses tiles to build a map and get points for cities, roads etc you build. V easy and takes about half an hour.

Splendor - card collecting game, buying gem mines to reach a points goal before anyone else, with 4 people takes a bit longer than less, maybe an hour

Jaipur - 2 players only, 15 mins, card game collecting camels and goods of the ancient world

I think these would all be suitable for 8 & 11 year olds and onwards.

King of Tokyo - a perfect length and always a really close finish, very well balanced and great theme.
Camel Up - totally random, loads of gotcha moments but not really nasty, we play for 5p a point.
King domino - nice mechanic, quick and keeps up interest, we play fast and loose with the 5x5 rule for kids
Another vote for sushi go.

Ligretto is brilliant fun but makes your brain hurt because you have to think very quickly! It's passed a fair few lockdown hours for us.

treeeeemendous · 14/10/2020 07:57

I'll prob get flamed but exploding kittens is on offer on amazon right now (I know it's not the Christmas thread!)

mdh2020 · 14/10/2020 07:59

Labyrinth is a great game. The board constantly changes and it can be played at different levels so adults and children alike enjoy it. We even play without the children.

movingonup20 · 14/10/2020 08:02

I heard cards against humanity has a junior edition. My DD's loved this as teens (adult version but it's pretty crude) so a junior one is likely to be great, silly rather than rude!

I love Ligretto! Takes a few minutes to get your head around the rules but once you get going it is amazing. Always take it on holiday with us.

Sushi Go
Dixit
Something a bit more 'meaty' - Smallworld

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/10/2020 08:12

Recent discovery here has been Planet. You compete to build the most hospitable planet to different species.

onemouseplace · 14/10/2020 14:00

We like Labyrinth here as well (DC age 11, 9 and 6). We're also big fans of Dungeon.

hyglop · 14/10/2020 14:07

Ticket to ride. Great family game that lasts long enough to be worthwhile but doesn't drag on all evening

grandmasterstitch · 14/10/2020 14:11

Second ticket to ride, fab game and I think they do a junior version

GypsyRoseGarden · 14/10/2020 14:19

Sorry for stupid long links - posted before I could clean up the links

Trixie18 · 14/10/2020 14:47

Uni is a great game to play at all ages 😁
