Both, why choose?

Dogs are harder to care for well though.

Lardlizard · 13/10/2020 21:24

If you choose both
Would you get a kitten first or puppy ?

Cat. I have 3.
No moulting all over the house. No having to take them for walks in the pouring rain at 6am before work. Easier to go on holiday as neighbour can pop in and feed them and they don't mind. They're cheaper to buy, feed and insure and vaccinate and spay. They still come and give you a cuddle when you get home, sleep on your bed and are affectionate. Mine even comes for walks sometimes.

DramaAlpaca · 13/10/2020 21:25

I have both, but I'd always choose a cat over a dog.

I like the independence and aloofness of cats. Mine comes for a cuddle when he wants to and does what he likes the rest of the time.

Dogs are too clingy and needy, at least my two are. I'd like to be left alone sometimes without being constantly followed.

HiGunny · 13/10/2020 21:26

Cat. I have both but even though I love my dog I'd never get one again. They require so much care, make such a mess and really tie you down. It's like another child in the house but one you can't bring on holidays etc!
The cat is so much easier and I like his independent spirit.

LST · 13/10/2020 21:31

I currently had 3 cats and a dog. I love my dog with all my heart but after him I won't get another. They are a lot of hard work compared to cats. I'd never be without a cat

Tadpolesandfroglets · 13/10/2020 21:32

Cats. They are just way cooler.

Panpig · 13/10/2020 21:35

Definitely cats! They just seem more civilised in every way. Dogs are messy and dirty but some people obviously really love them

zafferana · 13/10/2020 21:41

Cat every time - much easier - plus I'm a cat person.

I think if you're an 'either' person then get a cat first, just because they're easy. Lots of my friends have dogs and they just look like such fucking hard work. The puppy stage looks hideous, like having a baby who shits and pees all over the floor, then you've got another couple of years of training/young dog energy to deal with. By the time they're about two years old they seem to calm down, but they still need to be walked at least once a day, whatever the weather, and if you can't/won't just let them out in the garden to pee/shit you've got to take them out every couple of hours. They are a massive tie too - you can never be out of the house for more than about 4 hours unless you have someone to go and let them out, etc.

purrswhileheeats · 13/10/2020 21:45

Cats are the best things in the world. And when they're being annoying you can just put them outside for a while and they'll look after themselves Grin

Lardlizard · 13/10/2020 21:47

Cat are far less daft, like dogs eat plastic and anything they can get hold of never seen a cat do that

We have 4 cats and 2 dogs. Even though they are supposedly family pets my son and I love the cats best and DH loves the dogs the most. Cats come up with me for a cuddle and dogs follow him everywhere. I feed cats he feeds dogs.

myhobbyisouting · 13/10/2020 23:55

None. Both make your house smell weird and nobody wants to visit. And dog shit is revolting and cats make your neighbours hate you. Get a fish

CovidCanFuckOffNow · 14/10/2020 00:36

Both. 2 cats and a dog household. They all bring us immense joy with their antics.

The dog is like a cat in that she's happy to sleep when you need her to be chilled but then unlike the cats, she is tonnes of fun on a walk and playing outdoors. She was a very high maintenance puppy but she is a beautiful dog and I would do it again. She is great on holidays and lovely with other dogs etc

The cats are silly and hilarious and relate to us all in different ways - one of mine only chats to my DH and normally sounds off about his hard day killing mice. He is daft and playful with my DC and really purrry and cuddly for me. The other cat manages to get fed multiple times per day by tricking people that he's been starved and by the we get back to each other on messages we've already filled his bowl to shut him up...

We had a dog when we got the cats as kittens, then he passed away and then we had a puppy with the cats as adults...

SkiingIsHeaven · 14/10/2020 00:54

Dogs every time. Dogs are companions and get you out into the fresh air. They love you and are happy to see you every day.

Cats walk on kitchen surfaces and shit in my garden. Cats and cat owners don't clean up their shit. I don't like cats. I don't see the point.

SingingInTheShithouse · 14/10/2020 01:02

Cats every time. So much less tying & I love their independent couldn't give a feck attitude

grassisjeweled · 14/10/2020 01:04

I'd have a dog on the condition that I could always work from home because of him

Liddell · 14/10/2020 01:29

We have a cat and a dog.

The cat is really my pet, I love her she is so cute and cuddly. She never scratches and likes to sit on my chest for a cuddle, then settle down beside me.

The dog is my partner's pet. He loves the dog.

The dog gets walked 4 hours a day, costs a fortune to feed, makes a mess everywhere, barks and seeks attention non-stop. He also likes getting as wet and dirty as possible. He is never left alone.

His daughter have dogs and they are the same (apart from the walking).

Tillygetsit · 14/10/2020 01:40

Dog because this...

What pet would you prefer and why ? Cat or dog ?
SueblueNZ · 14/10/2020 04:33

Cats because they take care of their own poop.

mathanxiety · 14/10/2020 05:38

Cats.

Dogs ae exhausting.

MsMarvellous · 14/10/2020 05:54

I have both and I love them both. Dog is so much more expensive, demanding, and difficult. But the bond is stronger.

Downwithcovid · 14/10/2020 05:59

Dogs are far too needy and demanding.

Fancy a night out? Best find a dog sitter or kennels.

Fancy a spontaneous night out? Not happening

It was good to catch up, do you fancy getting another drink? I can’t, need to get back to the dog.

Watching a bit of TV? Bloody dog bouncing around the place.

Feeling a bit rough and feel like a lie in? Can’t or the dog will poss and shit everywhere.

Fancy an early night? Ok, but will need to set the alarm to be up to let the dog out earlier than usual because he won’t have bee out last thing for a wee

Want a house or car that doesn’t stink of dog? Unlucky

Fancy a nice light coloured carpet? Nope

Seriously way too much work and commitment for what they give back and the majority I see are living in places too smal and without the space and freedom they deserve anyway. There really should be better regulation about who can and can’t have a dog as you really need a fenced outdoor area for them to have free roam of with a good sized proper kennel.

Love ours, but would never have another and will be glad to have a less restricted life back when she is gone.

Oh - and the financial cost is also huge.

SexyGiraffe · 14/10/2020 06:08

I was always a cat person, but DD is seriously allergic so we got a dog instead.

Best thing we've ever done.

He is a wonderful, caring and joyful part of the family. He helps keep us fit, he makes us feel safe, and he brings me genuine joy every day. Yes, he is work, but so are kids. In fact, we love having him so much we've just rescued another puppy. We are fortunate to live in a large bungalow with a big secure garden and we are both at home all day so we can manage. Still love cats but can't choose between them now.

longwayoff · 14/10/2020 06:12

Have become allergic to cats now but, though I love cats, dogs win. Mine will wake up shortly and it will be a New Day! Hurrah! There's nothing quite so happy as a dog who has just found the world is stil here.
