See what's happening in Westminster if my title makes no sense.
The tory majority can do what they want now.

It was always going to happen, nailed in 18 months ago. Bunch of shits.

Yes I saw the majority of this (and will see the whole thing on catchup) but thought this may well be where I actually become pescatarian or vegetarian... I hope the government don't sell out our farmers but really have little faith they will protect the food standards we currently have and our farmers' livelihoods too.

I don't understand why this isn't a bigger news story ☹️

Don't we already have chlorinated salads?

Intensive farming is no good regardless of chlorine or not. Aside from being vegan or vegetarian, if people are concerned about welfare standards and quality of food they should avoid anything but organic produce. Unfortunately that's currently unaffordable for many - which is why the more immediate campaign should be on making healthy good food more accessible. Chlorinated chicken is the least of our worries.

Chlorinated chicken is the same issue. The meat is washed with chlorinated water because the live animal welfare and slaughter processing rules in the US are so lax that the meat cannot be guaranteed to be uncontaminated otherwise. It's like going back 40 years in farm animal treatment terms.

The presence of legal super-cheap chlorine washed imported chicken will drive down the quality of UK-sourced better welfare chicken as they can't keep up with the prices otherwise.

The high-end free range animals won't be much affected, but the average situation of UK farmed chickens will get worse. That's the shitty end of capitalism, and plays into what the Tories want.
