Strength training

I've read a lot about strength training being particularly important for women, but what does it actually mean?

I know the obvious candidates like proper weight lifting etc, but what constitutes strength training really? I'm a total beginner, and just so seeing what the options might be! Is it weights and stuff, or do other things count too?

Advice much appreciated!
