where to buy a mattress?

Hi All,

Looking to buy a new double bed mattress, want a very firm one and am happy to spend up to around £500. But getting overwhelmed with the thousands of options online....

Are there online mattress stores that you have had good experiences with?

Are there high street shops that you would recommend?

Are there particular brands of firm mattress that you would recommend? That have lasted really well etc.

Thank you!!

Ikea mattresss have 25 yr warranty and you can test them out in store. I personally cannot recommend their Hovag enough!
They come rolled up so they fit in the car, and they have all the fillings and all the hardnesses. Worth a try

We used Bensons for Beds, they had a huge range (ours is medium firm though). It's not something I'd choose online, you really need to try them out.

Thanks both. It looks like I'd better get myself to Ikea and Bensons!

Any other ideas out there?

@DuesToTheDirt - out of interest, which brand did you go for and are you happy with it?

Ikea Hovag is a great mattress. We've got the medium firm, but they do a firm one. We've had it a year now, and it's been brilliant for my bad back and joints

Another Hovag lover here - We've had memory foam, expensive sprung, cheap soft ones, with and without toppers (we move a lot), and I'm very-very happy with the Hovag we've now had for almost 2 years. We got the medium firm, with a thick wool topper, and it's the perfect mix for us. I found the memory foam ones seemed great at first, but then I found myself aching - I think from them being harder to roll over on.

Hovag!!! Fab

Ours is Sleepmasters Serenity Natural Pocket 1500. It's like sleeping on a cloud. Had it sbout 5 years now and still fab.

Is Sleepmasters a brand of bed? There are so many, I can't keep track! Where did you buy it from?

Bought it from Bensons for Beds, I read the details from the label on the mattress. Doesn't look like it's on their website at the moment. Sorry, not helpful!

Where is your wool topper from please?

Ah... How frustrating! Oh well...

I've heard that 1400+ pocket springs is the way to go so that sounded like a good bet! How much did it cost?

I'm going to go to Bensons and lay down at the end of the week, but it's still a big guess at that point and recommendations are much more helpful!

I think it was about 500. Was expecting to pay about 200 but ah, well. It came down to that one or one in John Lewis, but on a second visit to both I could feel the separate springs in the JL one. Pick a few in your price range, lie down and take your time.

Also, I don't know when you last bought a mattress but we found that in the years since we previously bought one they had all got deeper, so this was a factor - some were way too deep for the style of our bed.

I tried to buy an Eve mattress in July. It still hasn’t arrived and their customer service people are being v slow chasing it up.

Back on my mattress hunt. Anyone else got tips? There are a lot of online matttress places - has anyone used 'mattress online' or 'mattress man' or 'the sleep shop' ??
