Memory Foam mattress - breaking in

I have had a bad back on and off since pregnancy. I decided to go for it and get a good quality memory foam mattress to see if that helped, having read good reviews. It was hard to find anywhere to test due to Covid, but mattress supplier had a 90 "test at home" guarantee so figured it was worth trying.

I've had the mattress 1 week and my back has flared up really badly. Can't be sure it's the mattress as it could be a coincidence, but seems a strong possibility. I spoke to mattress supplier, and they said it's quite common for things to get worse before they get better with memory foam as it needs to break in and your body needs to adjust. It just sounded a bit odd to me, and I wandered if anyone had experienced this? And if so how long did it take for mattress to "break in"?

It's a bit tricky because I either have to return it in 14 days, so have to make up my mind pretty quick. Or to use the "test at home" policy I have to keep it 60 days first to give it a chance to break in, which is a long time if things don't improve.

Getting worse before it gets better sounds like dangerous (and purely sales-based) advice to me. I’d send it back.

Put it on the floor and walk on it, do it numerous times in a day, it helps open up the cells and makes it soften quicker.

My lower back ached after sleeping on our memory foam mattress for the first few nights. So I do think there's something in the idea that it takes your back a while to adjust to the new surface.

But having said that, I didn't have a pre-exisiting back condition, so not sure how comparable my experience is with yours.
