How old is "middle age", these days?

Was just realising that millennials can now be middle aged (ie 40), but then realised that maybe the ages have changed for being middle aged.

What do you consider to be "middle aged" these days?

40? I’m 44, and def consider myself middle aged, but I don’t see that as a negative.

AgeLikeWine · 11/10/2020 21:00

40-65, although some people in their 30s are already very middle aged.

Oh I don't see it as a negative! I just wondered if the goalposts had moved a bit.

It also amuses me when people curse "snowflake millennials" without realising that they're talking about nearly middle-aged people Grin

I’m 54 and don’t yet think of myself as middle aged Grin.

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2020 21:06

Always at least a few years older than me. So at the moment, 60 at least.

I suppose if middle aged is the middle third of your life then it is about 28 to about 56 based on an 84 year life span.
In reality it is probably 40 ish in terms of life style, but then some people are still parenting toddlers at 40 so maybe it is older.
As a 37 yr old parent of teenagers I definitely feel middle aged.

EhUp · 11/10/2020 21:09

Middle aged is your own age + 10yrs

So currently about 56 Grin

pineapplepalmtree · 11/10/2020 21:09

45 feels middle aged to me

ReneeRol · 11/10/2020 21:12

The way I look at it, I'm very fit and healthy, all my family live into their nineties so with genetics, advancing medicine and my lifestyle, I'm probably looking at 110-120 lifespan. I'll consider myself middle aged when I hit the middle, about 55.

Lifestyle can determine whether your body is 10-20 years older or 10-20 years younger than your physical age. Some people are middle aged at 30 and elderly at 50. It depends on your enviroment, experiences, lifestyle and stressors.

EugenesAxe · 11/10/2020 21:13

I’m edging towards 45-68 (as a 45 year old). But like people say, it varies by person. Some people in late 60s are ancient and some still full of vigour.

WildRosie · 11/10/2020 21:18

I'm early middle-aged (fifty next birthday). Anyway, what or who IS a millennial ?

MinnieMountain · 11/10/2020 21:18

I consider middle aged to be mid-way through what my life expectancy was when I was born. I'm 41, so I'm middle aged.

PleasantVille · 11/10/2020 21:21

Is middle age really even a thing nowadays, I can't think of any time I've used the term or even thought about what it might mean.

When do people use it?

Pollynextdoor · 11/10/2020 21:22

45-50
I am middle aged at 48. I think I am 48. I can’t actually remember which I am sure is a sign of middle ageGrin

DCIHoops · 11/10/2020 21:31

Varies - for me, it’s whatever age you are when you get up from the sofa and make a noise e.g oooof! Or joints clicking

EmeraldShamrock · 11/10/2020 21:35

55 in my opinion. Grin
It is hard to say I'm 40 I don't feel any different I'd be miffed if I was described as middle aged. Vain illusion
Mind you I'm sure if I spent a weekend with real young people in their 20's I'd feel middle aged afterwards.

DishingOutDone · 11/10/2020 21:39

I think 45-50 is the start of middle age, and 60-65 the end of it, and then 65 to 80/85 old age.

RuthW · 11/10/2020 21:54

Ten years older than I currently am

I'm 52.

Fink · 11/10/2020 21:57

I'm not sure. Because there's a phase when you're definitely not a young adult anymore but does that go straight into middle age or is there an in between stage? If it's only young - middle aged - old - ancient, then middle age would probably be 35 - 65. But if you could have some sort of not-young but not yet middle aged to cover 30s then middle age would probably be 40 onwards.

partystress · 11/10/2020 22:03

I keep bumping up my definition. 60 next birthday, which I know is old, but can’t accept that I am old. So thank you all PPs who have said up to 65 Grin

MilkRunningOutAgain · 11/10/2020 22:04

I’m 53 and I suppose I am around about now moving into being middle aged. I definitely didn’t feel middle aged at 40, I was still breast feeding!

firstimemamma · 11/10/2020 22:06

40-59

Trailing1 · 11/10/2020 22:07

I'm 35 and feel middle aged (assuming that I live until i'm 70!) Grin I think for me the kids and life stresses have aged me. I look and feel old.

Love51 · 11/10/2020 22:12

It cracks me up that 60-65 are middle aged, my family don't live long, but no one's family live to 120 -130!
I think it use to cover adults who were pre retirement, back when women retired at 60. So from 55 you'd be pushing retirement, 40-55 middle aged.
I'd take 80 as a life expectancy. Not sure what I'd do the last decade if I lived to 110 though.

Tbh the phrase is never meant in a complimentary fashion.
