Nintendo switch advice please!

I have three ds age 7 and 9. Two have switch lites and one has a proper Nintendo switch that connects to the telly. So far there is no online connection, I buy them games on the little disc things and they use those. They are always falling out because they need the disc to play each time and save their score and I think they end up deleting each other's scores when they swap games between consoles.

So.

They are nagging me to be friends with their school friends online. I know nothing about this, my dnephew set up the consoles for them!

Do I need an online Nintendo switch account for them to be friends with people?

Is this a good idea?

Can they play Minecraft without being online?

Do you have to go through a game to friend people?

Is chatting separate or in the games?

Oh, I am so clueless! How am I going to manage when they are older!!

Their data wont be erased by switching cartridges between consoles.

You can make friends outside games but need a code or Facebook log in to do do this.

I never chat to anyone online so dont know about that
