Do people dress up more in Liverpool?

Just watching the news and they are reporting on Liverpool re Covid. The footage shows people out in bars and pubs and they are incredibly dressed up, especially the women.

My DC are in their early 20s, so similar age to those being shown. When they and their friends go clubbing they all tend to wear jeans and the women might wear a slightly smarter top but often not.

The report showed women in amazing dresses and heels, plus hair, make up etc all immaculate. Is it a "thing" in Liverpool or is it just that my DC and their friends are ultra scruffy? I live in Cambridge and am fairly sure that younger people here don't on the whole dress up like that unless it's a particular "special" occasion like a 21st birthday. Not just for a regular Saturday night out.

Yes that's just the way some of the lasses are. Same here in the North East. I was quite embarrassed how dressed down my friend from the South Coast was when I took her out in Newcastle and had to suggest she may feel more comfortable more dressed up.
Surely you've seen the footage of Aintree?
Horses for courses.

Yes. People in Liverpool are generally more dressed up - day and night. It's a thing.

AlexaShutUp · 11/10/2020 09:03

It's a northern thing.

My friend lives up north and reckons people dress up more for nights out there- dresses and heels and hair done.

Cavagirl · 11/10/2020 09:04

Yes 100% although I think it's a North/ South thing not just a Liverpool thing.
I've been the underdressed Southerner PP refers to on many a night out in the NW! Although happily I'm old enough now to not feel too awkward and just enjoy being able to walk home in my flats Grin

Yes I've seen the footage of aintree but that's a "special" event. Same as Ladies Day here in Newmarket races - people dress up amazingly.

However this is just a regular Saturday night. I didn't realise that there is such a difference

Yes I always feel such a slob when I go to Liverpool, even the older ladies dress beautifully for shopping at the weekend and the little girls often have intricately plaited hair and look immaculate. We live in the countryside an hour away from Liverpool and people don't make such an effort here.
I really like it, its fascinating, but I love seeing people dressed up generally. It's definitely something the people of Liverpool do well, even my eyebrows feel inferior when I visit!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 11/10/2020 09:09

Yes it's a thing. I was really surprised when I moved away to go to uni because I was used to seeing girls with their hair in rollers and full makeup walking round Liverpool city centre on a Saturday afternoon (prep for 'out out' lasts all day). It's much more casual in other places. It was never my thing to get a Scouse brow and a curly blow and do my feet in wearing heels though!

Greenvalleysightseeker · 11/10/2020 09:12

I think it's something very specific to Liverpool, the North/Soiuth thing exists to a certain extent but the average lady of Liverpool goes way beyond the average Northerner. Some of them take the whole day to get ready for the evening including wearing rollers during the day, and many of them would never consider wearing anything twice etc . It's definitely a Liverpool 'thing'.

Piixxiiee · 11/10/2020 09:13

Yes definitely, it's a north thing, a lot of effort is put into appearance. A night out in liverpool is a very dressed up affair. Southern not so bothered so jean and top is standard.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/10/2020 09:14

Displaced Geordie here, and it's definitely a northern thing. I've lived in the south for more than half my life now - and I'm still usually more dressed up than anyone else on a night out, even when I've "toned it down"!

Obviouspretzel · 11/10/2020 09:14

Yep massive in Liverpool, but there is a north south divide as well.

IHeartKingThistle · 11/10/2020 09:15

Yep I went to uni up north and then moved to London. Got invited to a party, turned up in heels and an LBD and everyone was in jeans and sweatshirts. I'd always rather be overdressed though even now and I've been back South 20 years!

Rhine · 11/10/2020 09:16

Yes. Liverpool women in particular are always very well groomed. Even during the daytime.

Youngatheart00 · 11/10/2020 09:17

Definitely a northern things, especially in Liverpool and Newcastle. When I lived in Manchester I found it more casual. London is so much more chilled (not that anyone is getting dressed up for nights out at all at the moment really!!)

EhUp · 11/10/2020 09:17

I disagree that its a Northern thing, in my experience its very much a Liverpool thing

There are obviously exceptions but getting very dressed up for a night out (hair in curlers all day, dramatic make up, sky high heels) is very much the norm in Liverpool and the surrounding area

Bemyhat · 11/10/2020 09:18

Yeah it’s amazing! I looked smart in Costa once in Newcastle and still looked unkempt/ meek and scruffy compared to the glamorous girls around me.

Middle of the day for coffee!!

I love it! Good on them Smile

Flaunch · 11/10/2020 09:18

Women in Essex are like this too ime. I felt like a fish out of water when I lived there - so I moved! They were all so well groomed. I’m a scruffy mare at the best of times.

RuffleCrow · 11/10/2020 09:19

It's a thing

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 11/10/2020 09:20

I think it's lovely to see people make an effort to go out and enjoy the whole experience. No need to be boring all the time.

Muddybuddy · 11/10/2020 09:20

Def a Liverpool thing. More dressed up than Manchester. It’s common to see women on a Saturday in Liverpool in the day time with their hair in rollers, so they’re ready for the night out

Therollockingrogue · 11/10/2020 09:20

Liverpool and Newcastle for sure.
I love it. So glam!

inchyra · 11/10/2020 09:21

It’s a big thing in the NW and it always has been. It’s not even a class thing, as I know plenty of girls from hunting/fishing/shooting landed families up there who make a big deal of their appearance. I once interviewed an academic who was wearing electric blue eyeliner and a swishy blowdry at 8.30 in the morning and she looked magnificent long before you started on her CV.

Rhine · 11/10/2020 09:22

I’ve never understood why they wear rollers in their hair all day though? What is that about because surely you don’t need to wear rollers all day to achieve voluminous hair? Or is it just to make the point that they are going out out that night?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/10/2020 09:22

It's fascinating. Liverpool uni was my insurance choice many many years ago. I would never have survived the dress code expectations 🤣🤣
