Do people dress up more in Liverpool?

Just watching the news and they are reporting on Liverpool re Covid. The footage shows people out in bars and pubs and they are incredibly dressed up, especially the women.

My DC are in their early 20s, so similar age to those being shown. When they and their friends go clubbing they all tend to wear jeans and the women might wear a slightly smarter top but often not.

The report showed women in amazing dresses and heels, plus hair, make up etc all immaculate. Is it a "thing" in Liverpool or is it just that my DC and their friends are ultra scruffy? I live in Cambridge and am fairly sure that younger people here don't on the whole dress up like that unless it's a particular "special" occasion like a 21st birthday. Not just for a regular Saturday night out.

@Dancingwithdaftness
I agree re the Irish heritage being a factor.
The dressing up for Mass on Sundays (in the past )."Going all out" at Christmas, Easter, weddings and for Communions with new outfits. Wanting to appear well off in front of the neighbours.

Also Liverpool is a port city - isn't the name Scouser linked to the Norwegian sailors that arrived in to the city. Some girls would like to impress these sailors, so they got glammed up and went out on the tiles.
I am sure there are lots of other reasons too that historically have influenced the Liverpudlian love of style and glamour.

sociallydistained · 11/10/2020 17:49

My best friend is from Liverpool. When she goes back she has the full rollers in massive heels etc etc she doesn't do that here. It makes me nervous about going there for a night out (one day) as I'm not one who dresses up big time lol

geordiema77 · 11/10/2020 17:54

Yep, Newcastle has always been a place where standards are higher than elsewhere Grin

Geordie Shore was made for a reason and it wasn't because we were known for being boring and dowdy Wink

Glad to see our Scouse cousins getting the recognition they have long been due.

Horsemad · 11/10/2020 17:56

Newcastle reminds me of Liverpool a bit.

ilovepixie · 11/10/2020 17:59

I've been out in Manchester and it's not a thing there. Unless I've been going to the wrong places!

Kleptronic · 11/10/2020 18:01

I dunno about that @LadyEloise. I don't personally know anyone who went out out to get off with sailors, although obviously I can't know every woman past and present. Of course, sex workers have always found trade down the docks.

I worked in a pub near the north end docks when I was 16/17. One time some Canadian sailors came in (or at least, one of them was Canadian) and he invited me to a party on their ship. Before I could draw breath one of the regulars, in her 40s, screeched up at him (she was tiny) 'you piss off you, she's not going to any party on any fucking ship, she's a good girl she is!' and that was that. He took it well and gave me a Canadian flag pin badge off his jacket, which I still have.

Macaroni46 · 11/10/2020 18:12

What I don't understand is why getting dressed up equates to a good night out?
I love going out, am very sociable and go out a lot. I have a great time without taking all afternoon to get ready, feel fine with my unpainted nails and my self styled hair. I have a few 'go to' going out outfits which are worn repeatedly, slap on a bit of make up and a bit of jewellery and am ready within less than an hour usually (and for round here I'm considered quite glamorous) And the best thing is that I'm comfortable in my flat shoes so I can really enjoy my evening. (Am also too old, fat and arthritic to wear heals 🥺)
Maybe it's to do with the frequency of going out? Where I live, it's not unusual to go out 2 or 3 times or a week if not more so maybe that's why less effort is made in these parts? Cos it just wouldn't be feasible on each occasion?
Find it all fascinating

Pancakeorcrepe · 11/10/2020 18:24

I find it all fascinating, the only part I don’t understand is:

  • Why does dressing up equate to a good night out? These two elements are not related to me

And I can’t help but find it wasteful to buy outfits for only one or two wears or until it is “photographed”. That’s just not right. It’s not the end of the world, but it makes me a bit sad, just like with other unnecessary consumerism.

Lastly, the “no coat” I find absolutely ridiculous. Why would you not dress appropriately for the weather . You do not see the men out in below zero temperatures in short sleeves just because a coat doesn’t go with their outfit.

Of course these points above are not specific to Liverpool going out culture, it happens everywhere, but maybe more in Liverpool.

Kleptronic · 11/10/2020 18:25

Bloody hell @Macaroni46 2 or 3 times a week, where do you live, Wigan? 😂

I'm only kiddin yer. And before anyone starts, I love the pie-eaters. Look at it this way. Can you see why goths/punks/emos/mods/rude boys/rappers/insert genre/subculture/random bunch of people with an identifiable style dress the way that they do?

Because they want to. Because it's how they self-identify. Because they're part of a group and it's a part of how they go about belonging to that group. Everyone has their own version, or anti-version of that, and that's ok.

Straven123 · 11/10/2020 18:28

DD got her coat nicked last time she wore a stylish coat to the pub.

Glasgow was always very stylish - Not sure if it still is as I haven't been for a long time.

nancybotwinbloom · 11/10/2020 18:30

I'm glad that going out in pyjamas has ended.

I used to see loads by me in the Asda.

Rollers still going strong though and I like that look. Nice headscarf round them and you look fab. Full make up, eyelashes and loungewear.

I want to go out now.

Pancakeorcrepe · 11/10/2020 18:30

Straven123 so because of that, she doesn’t take a coat anymore? So what if her phone or keys got stolen one day, does it mean she wouldn’t take her phone with her again?

QueenOllie · 11/10/2020 18:53

@Pancakeorcrepe I didn't take one because nobody did as a student and then it kind of carried on (still live in the same town)
If you take a coat then you're queuing for the cloakroom, paying then queueing to get it back out, and if you go to 6 different bars then it takes time. Plus we never sat down, were always stood up dancing so you couldn't just hang on to it
If I was going out now and it was just to one specific place then yeah I would take one but not on a bar crawl. Possibly a giant scarf I could shove in my bag

Macaroni46 · 11/10/2020 18:54

Fair point @Kleptronic
By going out twice three times a week, I don't mean out out. I mean a meal, drinks at a pub etc.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 11/10/2020 18:56

Pancakeorcrepe Totally understand your comment about the consumerism aspect. DD usually only buys used from depop etc and resells the same item on these platforms too, most of her friends do the same too. She generally only buys new for a special occasion not for a standard night out and again would resell or donate to charity.

GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille · 11/10/2020 19:05

@chillerKillerCroisant & @zaphodbeeble absolutely no idea about the places you're talking about (southerner) but sounds marvellous - count me in!

I haven't worn a heel over 1 inch since lockdown, so taxis might be required....

Southwest12 · 11/10/2020 19:24

I've been here just over four years and last December was the first time I've had my hair blow dried and my make up done professionally before I went out. Hair was £10 and lasted three days, would get it done every week if I had the time.

I still can't do as glam as I feel I should, and the not taking a coat is a nightmare when it's really cold!

Imissmoominmama · 11/10/2020 19:26

I’m in the NW- everyone goes out in jeans round here!

LadyEloise · 11/10/2020 19:31

*@Kleptronic *
Blushoh lordy I wasn't insinuating that. Just they dress up nice up and might meet a fella.
Apologies if you thought I meant it in a "professional" sense.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 11/10/2020 20:32

Glasgow is similar, people seem to be much more into fashion than the east coast of Scotland. I do think that Celtic DNA makes you more interested in art, bling and looking glamorous and Glasow is full of people with Irish or west Highland genes.

annabel85 · 11/10/2020 20:36

@Rummikub

Although I love a Liverpool night out I’d avoid all the places where it’s too glam It takes a lot of planning and effort and I neither had the skills nor inclination to be glam. Possibly Because when I Have made the effort I still look rubbish! When I go out with friends outside Liverpool I never wear a coat though - much to their horror!
Liverpool nightlife is very diverse though (as any big city centre will be). You've got a lot of traditional pubs, old man pubs, karaoke bars etc where it's more casual dress. The clubs, wine bars, trendy bars are a lot more dressed up, it's not like every bar and boozer is full of everyone dolled up.

One thing you notice about Liverpool city centre is the sheer amount of pubs and bars and the centre is quite large if you include the Albert Dock area as well and the student areas. They tend to live for a night out there, so they won't be happy with the restrictions coming in.

Liverpool and Glasgow are so similar as cities.
