Do people dress up more in Liverpool?

Just watching the news and they are reporting on Liverpool re Covid. The footage shows people out in bars and pubs and they are incredibly dressed up, especially the women.

My DC are in their early 20s, so similar age to those being shown. When they and their friends go clubbing they all tend to wear jeans and the women might wear a slightly smarter top but often not.

The report showed women in amazing dresses and heels, plus hair, make up etc all immaculate. Is it a "thing" in Liverpool or is it just that my DC and their friends are ultra scruffy? I live in Cambridge and am fairly sure that younger people here don't on the whole dress up like that unless it's a particular "special" occasion like a 21st birthday. Not just for a regular Saturday night out.

@swimster01

Absolutely a Liverpool thing. All the appointments are booked out on a Friday for hair, make up, nails etc - lots of wannabe WAGs.
I hate this sort of generalisation, just because many women in Liverpool enjoy dressing up or looking their best doesn’t mean they want to be a WAG! I’m sure many of these women are successful in their own right and aren’t necessarily looking for a footballer to support them!
@toffeekiwi Another Scouse cabbie joke: “What do you call a Scouser with a degree?” “Dr Patel”. They used to literally have to import professional services but now Liverpool has one of the largest student populations in the UK. It costs £600 to rent a flat in a nice part of Liverpool but the London equivalent would set you back £2000.
The university seems to have a very good reputation, it's just a shame it's somewhere I wouldn't choose to live! Not because it's Liverpool, just I prefer the east coast beaches (on the whole, I do like Formby and the Hilbre islands)

ladygracie · 11/10/2020 10:22

We are in Cambridge too & my daughter and her friends get dressed up. But wear trainers or converse with their gorgeous dresses so it’s a mixture! And they don’t do it every time they go out.

I disagree that its a Northern thing, in my experience its very much a Liverpool thing

Yep! I've lived in Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester & it's deffo a Liverpool thing! Scouse glam is a glam like no other!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 11/10/2020 10:23

Ex Liverpool student. Definitely a thing. Along with never wearing a coat on a night out even in Baltic teperatures.

CoronaIsWatching · 11/10/2020 10:24

I think they look awful, orange with makeup an inch thick caked on, painted on eyebrows and so much mascara they can't keep their eyes open.

pilort · 11/10/2020 10:26

It's a sign of self-care, confidence, and good mental health. Slobs I don't admire so much (as I am one when I'm mentally unwell).

I don't think it's a case of either or. I personally wouldn't dress up in certain clothes but think you can still look nice in jeans. I do have Irish & French family & sometimes it's nice to make more of an effort.

Vello · 11/10/2020 10:27

@Ifailed

Clearly the power of the Patriarchy is stronger in Liverpool.
I cannot believe you have ever been to the North West of England to say this.

This thread has turned.

AnnaMagnani · 11/10/2020 10:29

Cambridge dressed up is not in anyway like Liverpool dressed up.

Cambridge dressed up I can do.

Liverpool dressed up - not even going to pretend.

Beautiful3 · 11/10/2020 10:31

Yes its definitely true! I have family there and have visited numerous times. I felt embarrassed of my smart /casual outfits for lunch in a bar, when women my age were glammed up (including high heels!) They do look smashing though. Wish people dressed up more where I live!

inchyra · 11/10/2020 10:32

Well this may make you choke @Macaroni46 but those women are not spending time and money on their appearance instead of achieving loftier things, they’re doing it as well as maintaining professional careers.

Justifiedandquiteold · 11/10/2020 10:32

Used to be a Glasgow thing as well when I was younger. (Don't know about these days as don't live there anymore)I used to be quite shocked at wearing jeans and hardly any makeup on for clubs when I visited friends in London. I liked getting glam up. It was great fun and gave you something to look forward to during the working week. Great fun! Spending a whole afternoon getting your eyeliner just perfect, lol! Oh to have that amount of time for yourself.

Subordinateclause · 11/10/2020 10:33

When I was at uni, it was definitely a locals' thing not a student thing.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/10/2020 10:38

OP, I’m surprised your DC get into clubs wearing jeans and a “slightly smarter top”. Most have a dress code.

inchyra · 11/10/2020 10:38

Anne Robinson, Paula Byrne and Nicola Horlick are Scousers in this very mould. Perhaps it’s something in the Mersey!

FamilyOfAliens · 11/10/2020 10:39

And I’m sure they give a fuck what you think.
wheresmymojo · 11/10/2020 10:39

So I've lived in both the North and the South.

I would say it's a North thing but it's just that Liverpool takes it to a whole other level.

My friends in Manchester still get dressed up for a night out in dresses, make up and heels which my friends in the South don't necessarily do at all.

FamilyOfAliens · 11/10/2020 10:40

@Macaroni46

But why is it seem as a good thing? If everything is fake and it takes all day to get ready, what's the point? I'd far rather be valued as myself, with my own hair, nails and eyebrows and spend my time and money on other things.
Sorry to break this to you, but different people have different views.

It depends on the club and the place surely? Where I live all the mid-20s girls are wearing either floral tea dresses or 'mum jeans' and skimpy tops with DM style boots or trainers to go out.

Not that the clubs are open now, but before lockdown they'd already started adjusting their dress codes for fear of being empty if they banned trainers.

I'm a bit jealous tbh. All the blisters I needn't have had if trainers and boots had been a thing when I was that age 🤨

Dancingwithdaftness · 11/10/2020 10:43

Students generally go through a grunge phase though. I certainly did. Clodhopper boots, a hat of some description and second hand curdoroy bell bottoms. Christ what a sight. Totally agree about the Belfast thing too. Maybe it's just all of Ireland really. It's just a certain age group I think - 17 - 25 mostly who really get glammed up. I always admire people who dress well and make an effort though. It makes me feel a little bit inadequate unless I've pushed the boat out too however.

JanewaysBun · 11/10/2020 10:43

I'm naturally quite a dressed up person but live in London so have often found myself being the most dressed up person in a club (well before kids... nowadays I'm mostly found at baby club!) I just enjoy it

I've always been like it, love a good party dress!

wheresmymojo · 11/10/2020 10:43

In fact I'm from Stoke (which isn't even proper North, only North Midlands) and the women there make much more effort than here (Home Counties).

I've been down here for 15 years now and have changed over time.

For the first 10 years I only ever wore 4 inch heels, full face of make up, always super groomed, tanning beds a regular thing, eyelash extensions for everyday use, etc.

Now I've gone native and only wear flats, don't wear make up that often and hardly ever dress up!

Lucindainthesky · 11/10/2020 10:44

Went to uni in Liverpool in the 90s and it was very much a thing back then. Was shocked the first winter that local girls didnt wear coats on a night out! There was a fashion then for brightly coloured lycra clubbing dresses with bits cut out and they all wore them.

puguin86 · 11/10/2020 10:44

It's definitely a thing. I live just outside Liverpool now. Having lived there for many years. Getting dressed up and all the hair / make up done was all part of the fun with my mates tbh.

Liverpool girls always look polished and lovely.

Will never forgot the first time I met DHs family. I was dressed up to the nines with my false eyelashes on 😂.

Definitely not a wannabe WAG either sadly. I'm the main breadwinner in our house

When was the last time you went to a club?

They really don't, not since the mid-2000's!
