Moles appearing overnight on child’s face

This morning my 8yr old DS has 9/10 new freckle type moles across his face and neck. They are brown in colour and slightly raised and about the size as if you have pressed the nib of a ballpoint pen onto something. Which is what I thought it was at first, but they are definitely part of him!!

Is this normal? Why does it happen? Could it be a sign of something serious I need to worry about?

Moles can appear suddenly and do during childhood. And they're nothing to worry about as long as they don't get craggy, sore, red or any of the other markers for skin cancer. Take him to the GP if you're concerned but it sounds fine.

OMG ! I’ve just noticed one on my sons face in the last 5 minutes and have been worrying about it! He’s 11 and tried to convince me it’s been there ages but I’ve looked at photos from 2 weeks ago and no sign of it.

Thank you, it’s just so strange how several seem to have appeared over night! I suppose maybe they’ve been popping up over the last few weeks and I just didn’t notice until today.

Could it be molluscum contagiosum?

Usually moles don’t develop overnight and certainly not an entire crop across face and neck. I’d look into molluscum as well.

Moles can develop quickly (matter of weeks) in children as can freckles. Freckles are usually due to sun exposure.

Some photos for further examination! They do seem very much like moles/freckles (is there a difference?) to me, what do people think?

The ones on his face are definitely new/overnight the ones on his neck I’m not so sure, maybe he had one or two already?

They don't look like Molluscum. If you Google you'll see that moles can and do develop more or less overnight. It's a combination of sun exposure and genetics.

If you're worried OP there's nothing else to do but visit the GP but I don't think there's anything to worry about. Do you or your DH have moles?

Dd and I both have moles like this - yes they do literally appear overnight
