Yoto or Tonies player

DS is 3.5 and thinking of getting him one of these but I don't know which one. My instinct says that he'd prefer the figures from the Tonie but that the Yoto has more longevity which could be better given it isn't cheap. I don't know anyone in real life who has one to ask, and in covid times it's not easy for me to see one in person.

My son has had a tonie box for over a year now. We love it. You can get audiobooks, songs and lullabies on it. He plays with his toys listening to it and we also put it on when he goes to sleep.

It travels well too and battery lasts a long time. It's been launched around the house a few times and still standing strong! I'm planning on getting one for my new baby's room too and they can share the tonies. You can also record stories on it. We have a figure that has family members reading a story on it.

I went with yoto for my 2 year old, it’s a British company, they are always bringing out new cards and it updates automatically as they develop more functionality.

The cards are more reasonably priced than Tomies £4.99-£8.99 plus there lots of bundles available which make them cheaper. The narrators all have British accents which was important to me from a language development perspective. Plus I like that there is a kids radio on there for an impromptu dance party. Very happy with our choice and great value for money my daughter uses it multiple times every day.

I decided against the Tomie as it is a bit more gimmicky, the cards are expensive, there aren’t that many cards available and they are mostly Disney stories whereas I wanted stories more appropriate for toddlers.

We’ve got a tonie and love it. We have 3 figures so far, and 2 of them we can load up with whatever we want on it. The Lee loaded figures are expensive I think, but we just bought a couple of blank ones and then add on our own music and stories....

They are both great but the yoto swung it for me as it has much more stories and all the extra features like the free daily podcast, kids radio, clock, Wi-Fi speaker etc. The cards are also much cheaper than the tonies although not as cute but I can get 10 "make your own" yoto cards for a similar price to 1 "creative" tonie. The only thing I don't like is that the yoto player cards are easier to loose as they are credit card sized plastic. A card holder or tin is a good idea to keep them in.

My kids have had the Tonie box for about 4 years (DH is German). I think it's better than the Yoto as it's soft - ours has been dropped so many times and it just bounces. I think the Yoto is made of hard plastic.

The figures are slightly pricier, but they are easy to pop on the top of the box, even for a baby, whereas I can imagine a baby would need help with the cards?

The figures are also a bit more exciting (e.g my daughter was very excited getting the Elsa Tonie as it's like a little doll). You can customise some of the figures so can put on your own songs and stories - v easy to do via the app.

The Yoto does have a nightlight though, which is good.

Sorry to be clear - I wasn't saying your 3.5 yr old is a baby - was just recounting our experience.

As much as I love the Tonie box and recommend it to everyone, I think the Yoto might be better for older children.

My 5 year old has a yoto. The yoto club is great and she’s listening to a wide variety of stories she wouldn’t otherwise have bought. Her favourite is the faraway tree. She sleeps with the white noise (fire cracking) sound and it also acts as her nightlight.
The daytime radio is nice and loud and I sometimes borrow it for the night time radio to get me to sleep once she’s already gone to sleep. She also links the iPad to it to play Disney music through the Bluetooth feature so she’s very happy with it.

We have two yotos we love them. The phonics pack is amazing, as a a family we have so much fun making the silly sounds. The radio is great as it has all different types of music but you know it's not for swearing in etc and there's no effing and jeffing 😂😂😂 book cards are great, we just love them in our house

Just wondering if anyone let's their little ones use the Yoto or Tonie in the night? Our 3 year old often wakes at night and needs us to comfort her and wondering if this might be a comfort (giving her just one book/song at night)...I'm leaning towards a yoto because of the night light too, for those who have one is it a decent light?

I was exactly the same! My son is just under 3.5 and thought that but some of the cards have more than one story on too. So it's good value. They also have a song on each which my son has really picked up easily. I found with the toonie it looks great and everything but the yoto has so much more great authors and they even have education cards like maths, literacy, science etc and that swung it a bit for me. We bought the yoto player and asked people to get him the cards he wanted. So he got a few packs. You can also record your own cards, so even if it's silly jokes, songs, reading stories and you can overwrite. All controlled by your phone as well
And it even has podcasts/quizzes and a radio.

@MUMBH yeah it's a decent light, can change the colour on your app and the brightness. It will also still play with the nightlight on

I looked into both and preferred the Yoto, but my 5 year old wouldn’t be swayed from asking Santa for the Tonie. It’s definitely more appealing for kids!
