Do you ever buy something to please your 13 year old self?

I was out shopping today and saw a pair of tailored going out shorts which are almost completely identical to a pair I had when I was 13. I thought I was the bee's knees in my smart shorts, leggings, ballet flats and plastic jewellery Grin

I haven't a clue where I'm going to wear them but my inner 13 year old self is so giddy with joy that I can wear them with BARE LEGS and high heels if I like Grin My mum would never have let me out like that!

I think I might have done it subconsciously as DH has commented on recent purchases looking ‘very 90’s’...

I bought a pair of suede desert boots identical to some I had when I was about 13 - I bought the originals from Shelley's shoes in Covent Garden after seeing them in a magazine shoot...they were bright red and I LOVED them. The recent replacements are a more sensible tan and from Office so not as exciting, but I love them just the same.

I wanted a crystal ball from the 'statuettes of dragons' page in the Argos catalogue SO badly when I was a tween.

Finally got one age 32.

Yes. Often. I'm in my 50's and my teenage daughter rolls her eyes at me.

winterisstillcoming · 10/10/2020 23:15

Yes! I have to stay away from paperchase and wilko's stationery section. And the Harry Potter section in Primark.

Last time I did an Amazon order I chucked a disco light in for good measure. I stick it on when I'm cleaning the kitchen in the evenings and I am young again.

You are my kind of person.

I almost bought some Hello Kitty pencils and erasers in tk maxx today as I was obsessed with that kind of cute stuff as a teen. I refrained though and felt sad.

I think I need a lava lamp somewhere in .y house.

Deathraystare · 11/10/2020 07:21

Yes! All the time! I somehow manage to be both 60 and 13! I often buy wacky nail polish colours and Colin the Caterpillar sweets (the veggie ones)!

Ghostlyglow · 11/10/2020 08:36

All the time. I don't resist the urge to do so anymore. Life is short Smile

Mydogisagentleman · 11/10/2020 09:52

Often. If I have the money.
I’m trying not to though. Me and DH are thinking about retiring abroad and the thought of sorting it all out fills me with horror.
He is a dreadful hoarder and we don’t need two lots

Cauterize · 11/10/2020 09:57

Yep just bought a sega mega drive mini - it's taken me straight back to 1993!

Cam2020 · 11/10/2020 10:35

I Ioved Shelleys when I was around 13 or 14! I worked near Covent Garden a couple of years back and always thought of it when I went down, Neal St and passed that building 💖

I've taken to pleasing my child/teenage self over recent years. I love listening to my old favourite songs, watching films and reading books even if they make me laugh (or more likely cringe) now. I even found an old, beloved toy from when I was about 7 on ebay and bought it! It lives in my wardrobe, but I love having it.

Ozgirl75 · 11/10/2020 11:14

I had a lovely velvet jacket when I was about 12 and just wore it to death, I loved it so much.
Bought another one aged 38. Love it. Occasionally have small children stroke the sleeves (I do know the children Grin)
All the clothes that are around now are very 90s and it’s hard to resist the short flowery dresses with boots and denim jackets, but I am 43.

Ha, is this a pandemic thing do you think? I bought a hoodie a couple of weeks ago pretty much identical to one I had aged 14 and am currently wearing it around the house with stripey leggings (which I'd always wanted to wear as a teen but wouldn't have because I was so self conscious about my body shape). DH never really comments on clothes but even he jokingly asked if I was going through a second childhood.

Also, the last few weeks I have bought an inordinate amount of brightly coloured and sparkly nail varnish. I have it on my toes so mostly no-one can see but it really cheers me up and gives me a bit of a lift. And every time I buy one I smile to myself and think of my mum rolling her eyes and telling me that I've wasted my pocket money buying nail varnish that is virtually the same colour as six others I've got.

paisley256 · 11/10/2020 11:28

Yes, books by Judy Blume, they take me right back to being 12/13. Also Enid Blyton - Come to the Circus, takes me right back to my happy place living with my beloved grandma.

Terralee · 11/10/2020 11:46

I'm 44 & can finally (sometimes) afford the decent label white trainers I wanted aged 13... in PE I was the only girl wearing cheap trainers when everyone else had expensive label trainers.
Maybe I'm too old for my Nike AF1s but who cares.
& my favourites are my Adidas Superstars, I'm saving for some more.

ItsALovelyDayToday · 11/10/2020 11:51

Yup! Chunky white Fila trainers, Adidas “poppers” trousers (banned by my mum when I was a teen), forbidden piercings (lip and nose).

Ooh and baggy t-shirts worn with leggings. So comfy, so nostalgic. Extra points if it has a Disney character on it Grin

ohidoliketobe · 11/10/2020 11:54

@BrowncoatWaffles I think you're right it's a pandemic thing, it is for me anyway
I've dyed my hair bubblegum pink. I'm wfh and lock down has got me so bogged down I thought fuck it. I would have worried about someone thinking it looked unprofessional or didn't suit me. But I went for it. It's faded to a rose gold type of colour now and I still love it. Raiding my nail varnish bag for some funky bright colours too. I've also started buying hoodies and t shirts which I would have dismissed myself as being too old for (I'm 33 ffs, hardly ready for the knackers yard) but because I'm just sat wfh or doing the school run, I'm very much of the midset well if I like it, why not

Saucery · 11/10/2020 11:57

Any book I want, without having to wait an age for the library copy to come round.
Silver and jet jewellery.

Em3978 · 11/10/2020 12:04

The notebooks, pretty pens and other stationery that my mum wouldn't let me buy.

35andThriving · 11/10/2020 16:04

I buy teddies for my 5 year old self. Smile

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 11/10/2020 16:08

I bought myself a spirograph when I was 21. I bloody loved it.

WellTidy · 11/10/2020 16:10

At the start of lockdown and WFH, I bought two packs of six rollerball/liquid ink type pens, that I normally only buy in blue. So I do my work using pink, orange, green (two shades), purple, light blue etc ink. Link here

CatsArePeopleToo · 11/10/2020 16:18

Videogames. Any that I want. New or old.
