How do artists who wear glasses cope?

I would like to start doing some painting and drawing again, but now I wear one of three different pairs of specs, depending on what I'm looking at. I've got reading ones, desktop computer ones (different distance from reading) and distance ones. If I'm drawing, I'll need the reading ones, but then I'd need the computer-distance ones to look at whatever it is I'm trying to draw - or even the distance ones.

Thousands of artists must have this problem. What do they do? Is getting a pair of varifocals the only solution?

TIA

Not an artist, I work with wood in a trade where precision is vital
I couldn't do my job if I didn't wear contact lenses. Glasses simply wouldn't work because they distort what I'm seeing and straight lines become bent.
Turner is an example of an artist who could have done with a pair of specs but is celebrated for his work.

Oh my god. I'd never thought of that as being a possible problem. Maybe all the serious artists wear contact lenses?

I think I'd absolutely hate contact lenses, but I suppose I could give them a go.

Maybe varifocals, I dont know if that would still distort as technically it's still 3 lenses in one bot one lense but might be worth enquiring. Although it's a pricey buy

I switch glasses when I’m doing medium-close work and have to take them off completely when doing very close up work.

The fact that I use a blowtorch sometimes is slightly unnerving (no glasses, face right in there) but I always make sure my hair is tied up.

I really need to get some varifocals.

I'm an artist and like yourself, have 3 pairs of glasses. One for reading/close up work, one for computer and one for distance. I chose to have 3 as varifocals make me queasy and fall over!

When working I wear the close up ones but tend to just look over the top of them when needing to reference my subject matter. It works for me though.

I always assumed that this was the basis of Monet’s work Smile I took off my glasses in Giverny so I could see it “properly”.

That's interesting. Thank you, Popcorn.
