This has been playing on my mind all night.
I was talking to a friend about a book I read as a teen called Underground to Canada and it reminded me of another book I read around the same time.
All I remember is the protagonist is a young black girl in early 1900s. Her father owns land next to a white man who wants it (Mr Ridley or setting?).
Anyways, during the book the girl and her siblings walk miles to school down a dirt track and the school bus for white children drives past them and splashes them.
At some point there is a fire on the families land and I think the KKK are involved.
I remember this book having a big impact on me as an early teen and I'd love to find it again. Does this ring any bells with anyone?
