What is cool/in fashion if you're 13 right now?

DD is 13 and is having a bit of a crisis of confidence over non uniform day tomorrow. She has shot up to 5'8 over lockdown and a lot of her "nice" clothes are a bit short/childish because she's lived in leggings and sloppy jumpers over lockdown.

She's not really into makeup and prefers to be comfy, which is great, but her peer group has moved on a bit and they're all starting to become a bit more focused on makeup etc, and I think she's feeling it a bit

I don't really have a good track record for being fashionable, which is something I'm trying to rectify as I've recently lost weight

I think she already feels a bit self conscious because of her height, and she definitely needs to be comfy but at the same time doesn't want to look too "different"

So what should I be looking for? One of the things we've realised is that she doesn't have any sort of fashionable warm coat or jacket that she could wear with a basic tshirt and jeans combo - she has a big duffle and her hiking jacket but that isn't non uniform day appropriate!

Any ideas?

I think leggings and slopping jumpers are what they're all wearing at that age!

The ones making a bit more 'fashion' effort seem to be wearing big baggy tops tucked into skirts - short kilt-type ones seem to be a bit of a thing, or just lycra tube-y ones, and clumpy trainers/boots.

ReallySpicyCurry · 08/10/2020 19:24

Yes, I did notice that baggy jumpers are a thing! But hers are all quite short looking now she's so tall - so I think there must be a certain type of oversized style to look for or something? I just don't know!

Coat wise, my 15 year old has just bought a short puffa-style jacket. I'll see if I can find a picture.

Hair wise, straightened hair put up messily in a hair clip is a big thing. And sunglasses on her head are obligatory. Whatever the weather and occasion apparently.

My 13yo and her friends seem to like short pleated skirts. She teams hers oversize sweatshirts. And fishnets!

Not sure that attached. Second try.

12yo DD has inherited a big, baggy red Benetton sweater that belonged to DH when he was a kid (MIL keeps everything), which as it happens is super fashionable right now!

Echobelly · 08/10/2020 19:34

Oh god, yeah - wearing big baggy tops that are actually longer than the skirt/shorts you are wearing (though my DD thinks this looks ridiculous!)

ReallySpicyCurry · 08/10/2020 19:35

Benetton is fashionable? Benetton Benetton? Huh. makes notes

Are those short quilted Rab jackets in? I believe I've seen something similar being worn

Ripped jeans. Looser than recently. More Mum cut.

Oversized jumper. Simple. One colour. Designer brand from TK Maxx always welcome but equally Primani or Shein are good.

Thick plaid scarf from Primani. Greys & neutrals.

No coat but if needed black hip length. Puffier styles good.

Hair down and straight or messy top bun. Two Dutch plaits also ok.

Trainers. Nike Air Force ones. 270’s or 720’s are all good.

Most of the girls at ds's high school seem to wear Nike trainers, sports leggings and hoodies. I think it's a good look for teenage girls, much better than what I wore in the 80's, the decade that fashion forgot Grin.
In fact I pretty much also live in sports wear and sweaters, hope people don't think I'm trying to be cool, I'm just all about the comfortGrin.

Dd age 13 and friends are wearing the short kilt style skirt/ or floral 'flippy' style shirt skirts and baggy jumper combo mentioned here or skinny jeans/leather look leggings and baggy loose tops.
Usually worn with Converse or chunky trainers (usually a type of Nike ones).
