Is it just me or are most of these dresses, and the way they are presented, hideous?

I clicked onto this link and had the strong visceral wtf reaction that used to be the exclusive preserve of the MandS Per Una collection.

It would be good to get a sort of barometer for my taste ... am I really that out of it with what others like and are wearing? Plus the clumpy boots in nearly all the photos.

Is it just me?

DM and I had a good laugh in Per Una today at the hideous old fashioned dresses. One really needed a pinny to go on top Grin
DM is in her 80s and they are far too fuddy duddy for her!

emmaliz · 07/10/2020 22:45

No not just you. The majority of them are disgusting

LilyLongJohn · 07/10/2020 22:49

The models all look like stroppy teenagers. I can almost hear them say 'it's soooooo unfair' and the dresses look way too big for them (and they are hideous)

Jamhandprints · 07/10/2020 22:50

Some of the dresses look like they would look nicer if the model was standing normally.

PerfidiousAlbion · 07/10/2020 22:50

They’re better than I was expecting actually but I know what you mean.

It’s fashion unfortunately and the Amish Housewife look isn’t going anywhere soon, sadly. It’s a look that only looks good on thin people in my experience.

I like the chunky boot trend though but wouldn’t wear it due to having colossal feet.

A French colleague used to say that British fashion was the laughing stock of Europe.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 07/10/2020 22:51

100%.

PestymcPestFace · 07/10/2020 22:53

You are right. Women should wear dresses that make them stand up tall with their busts and bottoms being presented in as pert a way as possible. They should also not wear sensible shoes, being hobbled is far more feminine Hmm

Merename · 07/10/2020 22:54

I’m with you. Also don’t get the clumpy boots, or worse, chunky trainers with frilly dresses look.

WhoEatsPopTarts · 07/10/2020 22:56

It’s you.

Fairyliz · 07/10/2020 22:57

The shops are full of dresses like this but I’ve never seen anyone wearing one.
Most women I know seem to live in jeans or leggings.
I do wonder if anyone actually buys them.

What actually stood out to me was the prints and (what seems to me) strange cuts and drapes of some of the dresses, coupled with what look like uncomfortable poses. I personally don't like the chunky boots with that sort of dress look - but I appreciate that there are those who do. Also, I am big advocate of flat/comfy shoes and apparently the "non-pert" jean/jumpers etc I wear is now "non-binary" so I am learning all the time.

I’m in my 60’s and have no idea where to buy clothes anymore. I just wear jeans/yoga pants/sweatshirts every day because most clothes (dresses, skirts, blouses) these days are horrible.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 07/10/2020 23:02

Some of them are ok, styling makes a huge difference.

There’s a lot of styles I don’t get. Grown ups wearing Duns/ Maxomorra/ Frugi prints, Irregular Choice shoes, platform trainers or really really short fringes. But that doesn’t mean I want everyone else wearing my very boring uniform of stripy tops and dungarees.

Have not done that for a while (my eyes!) but good to know they can still deliver a chuckle.

It's not just you and why are all their heads lobbed off!?

Enough4me · 07/10/2020 23:06

If anyone wants to buy a sack from me for £150 let me know. I'll walk over it with muddy wellies and add some lace so it will be as fashionable as those dresses 😉

PestymcPestFace · 07/10/2020 23:10

What stands out to me is the total mishmash of left over styles in a year when people have proved that; when the shit hits the fan, we would like to be comfy and washable.

Mum2threejs · 07/10/2020 23:23

Maybe they think that we’re all happy to wear these things as no one is going out to be seen in them Grin

FortunesFave · 07/10/2020 23:23

Some of the prints currently on dresses aimed at younger, fashionable women are HIDEOUS. They look like the ugliest florals...not nice florals but cheap looking.

TartanSlippers · 07/10/2020 23:26

I'm with you OP - they are shit aren't they?

SignOnTheWindow · 07/10/2020 23:27

Oh, the clumpy boots and frumpy dresses are just the 90s having a moment. Just wait till everything moves on a decade and all you can find in the shops are handkerchief tops and bumsters - shudder.

PhoebeSnow · 07/10/2020 23:29

They are all awful. I can’t stand the polyester baggy dresses like the infamous Zara dot one.

Indeed. Tits out, ladies, and remember, only ever choose Flattering Garments and Nice Heels.

That's really interesting as I was in secondary school in the 1990s so most of my memories are Spice Girls-esque Union Jack dresses, those platform things, Puffa jackets (?!) and short, tight things I can't now remember the name of but were a sort of skirt... a different sort of hideous as I think it involved wearing neon make up and lots of glitter...

The main thing I never want to see ever ever is sparkly shite sewn on weirdass places on an otherwise decent top and sleeves with holes in them. Why?!

Also: more decent, actually usable pockets please.

They're ugly dresses made worse by models being posed ridiculously. Someone upthread said stroppy teenager? I can see that. It also makes me think of a bloke leaning back sticking his oversized pot belly out, legs spread apart whilst scratching his balls or arse.
