Is it just me or are most of these dresses, and the way they are presented, hideous?

I clicked onto this link and had the strong visceral wtf reaction that used to be the exclusive preserve of the MandS Per Una collection.

It would be good to get a sort of barometer for my taste ... am I really that out of it with what others like and are wearing? Plus the clumpy boots in nearly all the photos.

Is it just me?

I love a loose dress & boots but I am a 90s tween/teen. The only thing I don't like about current fashion is everything is very homogenous, these days the shops seem to push one look so if you go out virtually every is dressed the same.

GinWithRosie · 10/10/2020 08:56

So OP...what DO you like? 🤷‍♀️

I actually love a long floaty floral myself, especially with sleeves! I've 'suffered' years of not being able to find a dress that covers my fat calves and covers my batwings, and ended up either having to wear trousers or cover up with a cardigan (spoiling the effect of a particularly pretty dress feature) and thick opaque tights!

When you're over 50 and have 'wobbly bits' this style is very forgiving 🥰

They are missing their target Audience
No one in early twenties will buy their clothes from jL
It’s where mother in laws buy from ..older women

Doublevodka · 10/10/2020 08:59

Sorry everyone but I love the floral dresses with Doc Martens look. I have a few. I'm so happy that a more comfortable and modest look is in at the moment. I absolutely loathe the fitted dresses, bardot tops, heels type of thing. I'm slim but hate anything showing too much cleavage and legs so I'm more than happy with this current style.

They should be at home, knitting.

MrsSchadenfreude · 10/10/2020 09:01

The word “frum” comes to mind.

rosy71 · 10/10/2020 09:06

I like them. They remind me of what we used to wear in the 90s. Quite a few of the younger staff members at work dress like this. I'm a big fan of dresses although I wouldn't go for DM boots anymore.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/10/2020 09:06

I think they're great. I particularly love the styling on this - I don't wear leopard print as I'm too busty but this looks brilliant

I'm so much happier at the comfortable look women wear now

LaurieFairyCake · 10/10/2020 09:07

Oops

I don’t know if I’m just out of touch, but I find women’s fashion so uninspiring and ugly lately. Dresses seem particularly lack-lustre.

@CantDoMessyBuns Me too! I don’t get how and why this Little House on the Prairie trend took off.

I feel sorry for 19-year-old boys, really. 😆 The student union bars (if they’re open) must look like Amish harvest festivals.

Laiste · 10/10/2020 09:10

For me they're all shite. I'd look like a sack of coal tied up in the middle in any of them.

I've got a big bust and although i do have a defined waist i have not got a very flat tum (4 kids). Anything floral and belted at the waist or - worse still ''flowing from under the bust'' will put me firmly in old ma' from the homestead territory Hmm Just give me a wash board and half a wooden barrel and the look is complete.

Thinkle · 10/10/2020 09:11

I love this look too, I feel like I’ve waited years (I’m early 40s) for my turn with fashion. I’m fat thin. I’m a small dress size but I have always had a rounded tummy and small boobs and generally wobbly in other areas except my calves which are thick and sturdy. These dresses flatter my body shape much better than tight clothes, and they fill me with confidence. And I love DMs which to be fair must also be good for your feet and back.
I’ve also been shopping in John Lewis for about 10 years but I do like to knit... ooh maybe a big slouchy oversized cardigan should be my next project. What do you think?

Oh god I hope you don't have daughters... God forbid women should dress for their own enjoyment and comfort rather than the male gaze Hmm

I know you think you're being funny but if young women have stopped dressing for the benefit of young men, that is long awaited progress surely?
randomer · 10/10/2020 09:16

Are Universities insisting 19 year old boys dress up as Amish women?

Must be some kind of prank surely?

Savemyusername · 10/10/2020 09:20

The last time I had a night on the town (rare) the young women were in dresses/skirts and trainers and I thought they looked great. Much better than hobbling around in stilettos which I used to do and then could barely get home as my feet hurt too much.

I like the look but I am small and I do think it suits tall slim types best as I am swamped in baggy clothes.

Bubbletrouble43 · 10/10/2020 09:23

As for feeling sorry for 19 year old boys.... Eye roll....
Since when did men dress in tight vests, shorts, tool belts and rigger boots ( my choice of titillating menswear) on a daily basis to make me happy?

HelloDulling · 10/10/2020 09:26

Love a lot of these, I think it’s a great look, really cool. Doesn’t suit me as I’m quite short.

Lucky that there are lots of shops to chose from, and plenty of other styles available for shoppers in search of skinny jeans/figure enhancing/glamorous clothing.

pilort · 10/10/2020 09:27

Give me Amish over bodycon any day.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 10/10/2020 09:29

I’m loving the cottagecore/little house on the prairie style. Apart from a few years of trying to fit in in secondary school it’s the kind of look I’ve always gone for, even as a kid, so it’s nice to be able to dress like that without people looking at me like I’m mad!

I won’t wear polyester though so wouldn’t wear a lot of those dresses

LaurieFairyCake · 10/10/2020 09:30

Thinkle

Great idea to knit an oversized cardie - I had one years ago and I really miss it

Batfinklestein · 10/10/2020 09:33

I love a lot of these too!
I’m verging on petite at 5ft 3 and a half, and have an hourglass shape figure. These kind of dresses work for me with a belt.
I like that they are comfortable, but look a bit dressed up. Can be worn in warm weather with bare legs and trainers, but can be layered with knitwear and tights for cooler weather.
I’ve been seriously thinking of buying some Doc Martens for the first time in 23 years!

Mentounasc · 10/10/2020 09:36

I've always had a weakness for a floaty floral sack dress, but none of these really grab me - this current round of cottage core is just a bit too flouncy and Amishy for my taste. Why would I want to look like the fifth wife of a Mormon?
Having said that, they're nowhere near as hideous as the average Per Una item - but that stylist needs to be fired.

DilysPrice · 10/10/2020 09:43

I think this dress style is clearly working for all shops (insofar as anything is working given the reduced clothes spend at the moment). Young women buy it because it’s fashionable and looks great on them and older women buy it because it’s comfy, practical, hides the bits of their body they don’t want on display and is fashionable. I see loads of women wearing this style of dress, including me. I wear mine with a big leather or suede belt and trainers not boots because my ankles are the one part of my body that I am still happy to show off.

Hell, I still see lots of women wearing the Zara Dress with a jumper over it. They all look absolutely fine in them, at no point do I think they’ve escaped from a seventies jumble sale, because I’ve accustomed myself to the current fashion. If I’d recently awoken from a five year coma then I might find the look took a bit of getting used to, but in that case I’d probably be too busy asking why people were wearing masks to go to the shops.

longcoffee · 10/10/2020 10:09

Was looking for a plain black dress online last night. There were some corkers, but my favourite model pose was the poor girl who had been made to crouch in a bath, in a garden, in a black wrap dress.

Why? How does that in any way help sell the dress? How much garden bath crouching does the general jersey wrap dress consumer do?
