Is it just me or are most of these dresses, and the way they are presented, hideous?

I clicked onto this link and had the strong visceral wtf reaction that used to be the exclusive preserve of the MandS Per Una collection.

It would be good to get a sort of barometer for my taste ... am I really that out of it with what others like and are wearing? Plus the clumpy boots in nearly all the photos.

Is it just me?

Some of you would be absolutely horrified at the TOAST threads!!!

A lot of model poses these days remind me of this:

@Oldraver it's BRIGHT orange but strangely enough I think looks quite classic. It does get some stares Grin I've usually got it on with dresses and chunky boots so maybe that's the problem

Annasgirl · 10/10/2020 11:56

@randomer

I feel sorry for 19-year-old boys, really

Are Universities insisting 19 year old boys dress up as Amish women?

Must be some kind of prank surely?

I love some of them, but then I love floaty dresses with boots or trainers - a hangover from my 1990's youth. Add a leather jacket or denim one and I am good to go. It really only works in Spring and Autumn though - it looks awful on a wet and windy day!!! So I don't get to wear this look much in Ireland.

I'm another who is thankful that those hideous body con dresses have had their day - and I say this as a slim woman, but I hate my body being "on display".

DilysPrice · 10/10/2020 12:20

Clearly I was imagining seeing that Zara dress on every other woman on my high street toffeekiwi. Maybe they were kidnapped and forced into them at gunpoint.

Lollyneenah · 10/10/2020 12:23

I quite like the short length dresses Blush
My enemy is zara, I'm 5ft1 and hourglass shaped so I cannot for the life of me look at a page of zara clothes and figure out how their clothes would look on me

She seems to be saying "no Caspian! Mummy wants to wee alone!"

OP or anyone else who thinks they're awful.....I'm interested to know what you do like?

The hate for bodycon dresses is understandable but why are posters implying the only alternative is little house on the prairie style? There are a million dress styles in between skin tight and sack dresses.

ViciousJackdaw · 10/10/2020 15:33

@LilOldMe

This dress and pose is hilariously hideous.
It looks as though she's trying to get some air to her nether regions! Perhaps she has thrush from modelling polyester knickers?
FamilyOfAliens · 10/10/2020 16:24

The only thing I hate it that it's mostly polyester

As I posted up thread, some of the fabrics are a polyester mix. But the majority are viscose or a viscose mix, because viscose has the weight and drape you need for this style of dress.

StanfordPines · 10/10/2020 16:28

They say if you remember it the first time then you are too old for it the second time.
Well this is the 3rd time for me (70s, 90s and now), so I’m certainly too old.

CantDoMessyBuns · 10/10/2020 16:51

I think I’ll just have to accept that this fashion ‘moment’ is absolutely not for me.

I like tailoring, waists, v or scoop necks, strong plain colours, fabrics with a bit of weight, absolutely NO florals and even in the 90s, I never, ever did big chunky boots or DMs. I hate trainers and dresses. It’s all the antithesis of what I find stylish or that suits my figure (very tall, hourglass).

Im not being snarky. I’m obviously way out of sync with the fashion zeitgeist.

Fashion changes, though, thankfully. Maybe there’ll be a big post-covid move back to a bit of glamour, some proper tailoring and beautiful shoes

@Fairyliz

I love the tiered midi dresses, I can't afford John Lewis or M&S prices so I buy mine mainly from Asda, one or two from Primark.

I have about ten of them, the rest of my dresses are knee length smock style.

I don't like the jeans and jumper look,

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 10/10/2020 18:35

They're not to my taste and I wouldn't wear them but I won't say they are hideous because, you know, some people obviously like and wear them and who the hell am I to say what does and doesn't look nice on other people?

I always have a problem with threads like this because the OP is worded in such a way as to be as judgemental as possible. Some people will quietly think that what you covet - and think you look nice in, OP - does absolutely nothing for you. They just will be better mannered than to say so.

LeanishMachine · 10/10/2020 20:45

Now, I've just dressed for a casual but not too casual Saturday night dinner. I'm a slim woman in my 50s and initially went for a fitted but not tight shortish dress and knee boots, that has been my go to for these kind of events for the last few years. My god it looked dated! I found a floaty summer dress, biker jacket and chunky ankle boots that is much better and nicer to wear.

Hyperfish101 · 12/10/2020 06:56

That’s interesting @LeanishMachine. Funny how things just look out of date eventually. I mean people should wear what they like of course.

It’s like skinny jeans. Gradually they are looking a bit dated.

cabotstove · 12/10/2020 09:51

I thought they were definitely dated but now that long boots are in the shops they seem useful again.
