Tonic Energy gone bust

Evening all

So discovered via email from Martin Lewis newsletter our energy supplier has gone bust. It sounds like we'll be contacted by a new one appointed by Ofgem soon and be able to switch if need be and any credit is protected.

Problem is they've taken their website down so I've no way to check my useage which I'll need to find a good tarrif later, and I can't check my balance.

Everything was done on line so I've no paper records at all.

Can anyone advise? I'm a bit worried Sad

Right now it sounds like we just take meter readings and cancel direct debits. It's bound to take a few weeks before a new supplier makes contact, so a meter reading now and in a month's time will start to give an idea of usage. And I guess the direct debit level gives a ballpark idea of spend.

I was with tonik but started the process of switching a few days ago - was due to switch by the 20th.
I wonder what's going to happen to me!!

missbipolar · 07/10/2020 22:22

@SuperLoudPoppingAction contact your new supplier they'll be able to help you

MutteringDarkly · 07/10/2020 22:25

Have also just searched my email and found a copy of my latest agreement and tariff. Worth having a look through your messages? Once you have the tariff and monthly payments, I guess it's possible to work out use if your maths is better than mine

'I’m already in the process of switching supplier - will my switch go through?
If you've already started to switch away from Tonik Energy, you will continue to be moved to the new supplier you have chosen. You should not need to do anything. Your direct debit to Tonik Energy should be cancelled automatically, but check anyway, and if not, cancel it manually after your switch completes.

If you're in the process of switching to Tonik, the switch should go through as planned, although you would be switched to the supplier that Ofgem appoints to take on Tonik Energy’s customers'
OK will calm down now

Ahh good call on meter reading now and in a month and yes, I didn't think to check agreements.

I was starting to panic as I was in effect locked out of details.

Thanks all! What a ball ache though, eh?! Confused

Muttering the advice I've read has said not to cancel direct debits? May be worth double checking before you do.

I'm not cancelling mine until after my switch.

I've just had the email from Scottish Power about a switch but my gas and electric meters are both showing as blank and my smart meter is just showing an estimated bill for October so far, with no meter readings. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to access this?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 14/10/2020 09:17

No, and they haven't given a contact number or anything.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 14/10/2020 09:55

Same - I'm going to do meter readings etc today (although not on a smart meter). Apparently Tonik will pass our last readings, balance readings on so hopefully that will be accurate.

Oddly, my last x 2 monthly readings they asked me to do before ceasing to trade, once I'd input them I had a message return on screen to check as they were below what they'd expect based on estimated useage I'm just hoping that doesn't point to a problem with my account Confused.

Is anyone planning on shopping around and moving after Scottish Power switch is done? My understanding is we can do this penalty free?

Yeah I'll definitely be shopping around. I did a brief comparison when they announced the administration and eon game up quite good for me.
