Really boring but urgent cooking question!

I was just steaming some swede, carrots & potatoes to make mash.
Didn’t realise it had ran out of water and now the bottom of the pot is completely black and my house stinks.
But is the food still safe to eat?
It’s one of those 3 tier stainless steel steamers that sit on the hob

I'm sure it is safe. But have a small taste...it might well be tainted with a burnt taste

TheQueef · 07/10/2020 15:22

Yep if they were in the steamer.
Soak the pan in salt water.

FairFriday · 07/10/2020 15:26

It will taste of ‘burned’ I’m afraid. The pan will be a bugger to clean.

dorispiffle · 07/10/2020 15:30

Will be safe but taste burnt

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 07/10/2020 15:31

To clean the pan you could try putting some washing detergent powder and water hot from the kettle in. Then bring to the boil, simmer for a few minutes then take off the heat but let it go cold. It may then be easier to gently scrape the crap off the bottom.

PS that mash mix sounds yum Grin

Londonmummy66 · 07/10/2020 15:34

Bicarb and vinegar or a steradent tablet will clean the pan. Mash will be edible but be careful not to stir the burnt bits in as you take it out. Mash it up with a bit of pesto and no one will know anything ever happened to it...

BigFart · 07/10/2020 15:39

Hmm... the food definitely has that burnt aroma to it.
I’m so annoyed. I was so looking forward to some lovely buttery swede mash. Just cooked a nice bit of gammon and was going to have it with loads of veg and gravy 😭
Looks like it will be gammon egg & chips instead.
Spent ages chopping that damn swede as well.

Thanks for the pan cleaning tips! It’s in a very sorry looking state atm

The pink stuff might save the pan 👍

Petitmum · 07/10/2020 15:53

Pop a dishwasher tablet and some water in the pan, boil it up for a while and leave to cool. It works miracles!!!

AdaColeman · 07/10/2020 16:10

Next time cook your swede in the microwave, no laborious chopping then! Google "singing swede" method.

Have you a Morrison's near your? They have ready made mash
BigFart · 07/10/2020 16:32

@AdaColeman now that’s a new one on me! Will definitely be trying that, thanks for the tip!

@londongirl12 the ready made stuff just isn’t the same, I’ve tried them all. Aunt bessies was utterly vile!
Can’t beat the delicious homemade one!
