Awful interview

Hi all

First time contributor here! So basically today I had an interview for a new role/career. It was actually more pay than my job before I had kids. It's in the field of psychology which I studied at university. I'm so gutted, because I was at the final stage and I blew the interview. I froze on a couple of questions and just forgot info! I have been so down today because this was a big chance to change career and do something more meaningful. I feel like I've let the opportunity slip through my fingers and have to start from square one... I'm getting on a bit too so this was really my chance... :-(

Don’t give up. You might still get the job. If you don’t, there will be other interviews and the experience of this one will stand you in good stead.

PS oh man, I wish I hadn’t got the awful job I got on the back of an awful interview.

If you haven’t heard back yet then don’t give up hope! We always think things have gone worse than they have! Sometimes it’s how you recover from a mind blank that impresses them even more.

OP, poor you! Don’t give up hope yet.

But even if you don’t get it, there will be other jobs out there that’ll suit you just as well.

If you haven't heard yet you could send a thank you email with a brief acknowledgment that you froze on a couple of questions but wish you had expanded on x, y, z etc. Just a couple of short paragraphs of the key points. (If you are sure this info would help your chances.)

Someone sent something similar to this once in a hiring panel I was on. We were wavering between two candidates but this sealed the deal.

Everyone has bad interviews, to get to the final stage you must be a good candidate.

Write down the questions you were asked to help you prep for future interviews, and ask the interviewers to give you feedback on the interview.

Really sorry to hear that. Could you send a follow up email thanking them for their time and answer some of the questions you left out?

I’ve been to some terribly awkward interviews myself and I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, if you don’t get this job a better one will come along.

It was a job in the NHS with postgraduate clinical training etc. The questions apart from two weren't overly hard, but I just was so exhausted i blanked out looool I've been kicking myself, because I knew the answers to most but my brain just frazzled! At one point I was just staring at the screen as it was a video call and the two interviewers were just staring back at me!!! So cringey!

I did ask them when they would make decisions at the end of the interview and they said in 2 weeks!!!! Two weeks of torture awaits!!! I felt like it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, but like some of you have mentioned, hopefully a better opportunity will come along. I think I just couldn't believe I had got to the final stage in the first place because I have been a stay at home mum for over 5 years. SO out of interview practice clearly. Second interview in 6 months and screwed them both up!!!!

Please let me know your interview experiences and how not to freeze?!

I’ve been interviewing people non stop for 6 months and I can tell you that someone being nervous and freezing a few times is NOT a negative. I look for an honest, open personality first, and freezing in an interview means literally nothing if the knowledge and personality is there in what else they say.
