Best way to deep clean home carpets?

I got a quote from a carpet cleaning company (four bedrooms, stairs, landing and medium-sized rug) and it was over £300, which is more than I wanted to spend.

I’m wondering about hiring a proper carpet cleaning gadget like Rug Doctor and doing it myself - I’m currently furloughed so unfortunately have plenty of time on my hands. But maybe that would be a false economy and a) I’d hate doing it and b) I wouldn’t get a decent result ...

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice?

Shop around for better quotes with well-reviewed local expert companies. Really worth it - had two carpets that looked beyond rescue magically resurrected. Not comparable at all with Rug Doctor results.

Thanks @MrsLorenson. Our carpets aren't in particularly bad shape, just need freshening up. But it's a good idea to get some more quotes.
