School holidays and getting time off together

I’ve got my first child in reception so school holidays are a new thing to manage. One of the things I was wondering is how much time people generally try to take off together? We’ve always had most of our holiday together and it has hit me that we might not get that again for a decade.

Our broad plan is to have 2 weeks together in the summer and then split the rest of our leave to cover half terms and inset days and use holiday camps for the remainder. We might get the odd day together but my husband and I wouldn’t really see each other on our holidays. Is that normal?

For those who have done all this before (obviously appreciate some people don’t have the choice), have you found it better to have one parent off (and less paid childcare) or more time together but more time in childcare?

We used to have a week at Christmas, and 2 weeks in the summer all together. Then split the rest to reduce childcare (then I quit work and we got all DHs holidays together, which was much nicer)

We normally have 2 weeks in Summer and then one of the half terms/one Easter week together.

DH always covers Christmas as his company closes down while it is a very busy time for me so it is rare that I have time off. As lots of holiday clubs are closed over the Christmas holidays it is quite handy.
