Which way round do you hold the knife and fork?

And are you left or right handed?

Me and DS are both right handed, I hold my knife in my right hand and fork in my left - DS does the opposite.

Im left handed and hold my fork in my left hand and knife in my right

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 04/10/2020 16:35

Right handed and I do fork left and knife right.
DH is left handed and he does the same as me.
I was always told fork left and knife right was the ‘correct’ way

BexR · 04/10/2020 16:36

Right handed
Fork left
Knife right
Cos I'm a classy bird

WhatsGoingOn3 · 04/10/2020 16:36

Me, my husband and all 3 of our children are right handed and we all hold the fork in our right hand and knife in our left. It horrifies my in-laws at all times 😂

Doyoumind · 04/10/2020 16:40

Fork left and knife right. Anything else and I am extremely judgey.

lifesalongsong · 04/10/2020 16:41

So you're posting to tell us that you haven't taught him proper table manners? Confused
BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 04/10/2020 16:45

My family are all right handed, and all hold the fork in the right. Anyone who has the energy to get in a tizz about which hand people hold which item of cutlery in has too much time on their hands, I think!

Eminybob · 04/10/2020 16:46

I was taught fork left, knife right, but if I’m just using a fork only then I’ll use my right hand.

Now, while we’re on the subject, it is knife and fork isn’t it? That’s the normal way to say it?
Because dh says fork and knife and it irrationally annoys me.

SimonJT · 04/10/2020 16:47

I’m right handed.

If I use cutlery I just use my right hand.

AlwaysLatte · 04/10/2020 16:53

Fork left and knife right. Two of our sons are left handed and although we have tried to be helpful in the past laying the table the opposite way for them they always switched them round to use them in the same hands as us.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/10/2020 16:55

@lifesalongsong good one Grin quite frankly anyone who cares about something so mundane needs to seriously get a life.

Inextremis · 04/10/2020 16:55

I'm right-handed, I use my knife in my right hand, my fork in my left. My best friend is also right-handed, she uses her knife in her left and her fork in her right. It annoys the hell out of me, but I wouldn't dream of letting her know that!

Inextremis · 04/10/2020 16:56

...just wandering off in search of a life now...

Rummikub · 04/10/2020 16:57

Right handed
Fork in right hand
I’ve tried the other way and it feels wrong!
Who says that fork in right hand isn’t correct anyway?

lifesalongsong · 04/10/2020 16:59
@lifesalongsong good one Grin quite frankly anyone who cares about something so mundane needs to seriously get a life.
And yet you care enough to start a thead asking strangers how they hold their cutlery, is something lacking in your life?

emptyshelvesagain · 04/10/2020 16:59

Right handed.

Right hand for knife and Left hand for fork.....unless I am just using a fork, in which car it goes in my right hand. I have no idea what and haven't ever considered this until now Shock

TwoZeroTwoZero · 04/10/2020 16:59

I'm right handed. I hold my fork in my right hand and my knife in my left hand. I know it's wrong but 🤷

Wheytaminute · 04/10/2020 17:01

The correct way.

I'm left handed and can manage to hold my fork in my left hand and knife in right.

I am very particular about table manners--there's no shovelling, elbows out or holdng knives like pens allowed here.

Rummikub · 04/10/2020 17:04

I like the thread
I can see that I’m not alone in my freakish cutlery holding behaviour.

CraftyGin · 04/10/2020 17:05

@SimonJT

I’m right handed.

If I use cutlery I just use my right hand.

otherwise you just use your fists?
Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/10/2020 17:06

@lifesalongsong yes. I'm putting off doing the housework by starting a dull thread. Grin

lljkk · 04/10/2020 17:07

The wrong way.
I'm not British so the idea that there is a wrong way baffles me.
But so I'm told. And that I do it wrong.

Cocolapew · 04/10/2020 17:08

Right handed, fork in left hand, knife in right, cut everything to pieces and only use my fork in my right hand.

BitOfFun · 04/10/2020 17:10

I cut a bit up with the usual left fork, right knife. Then I switch the fork to my right hand to shovel it all in.

Islandswim · 04/10/2020 17:10

Perfectly fine in different places to eat with your hands (or chopsticks).

I use my hand when eating my home countries food, probably a couple of tim s a week.
