Home Schooling

Hi our 13 year old son has struggled since lockdown and is refusing to go to School. He is having anxiety issues and panic attacks and although we have started counselling he really isn't in a position to return.
We are reviewing Home Schooling and are seeking advice of an
on-line school that can be recommended please. We are hoping it won't be long term but maybe until year 10 when his options open for him to attend a Technical college. Thank you in advance for any input as we are really stuck at the moment.

We're in the same situation with 11 year old DD.
Would also like recommendations!

Do you actively want to home school or do you feel you are being pushed into it?

I ask because the local authority/school are still responsible for your child's education even if they are unable to attend school due to illness.

I work for a county council team whose job is to teach (and reintegrate) students who are too ill to attend mainstream education. 95% of my students have mental health issues and are in a similar situation to your son.

If home schooling is not your preference I strongly recommend pushing the school and LA to meet their statutory obligations.

Without wanting to pre-judge anything I can say from experience that it is very difficult for a student to reintegrate after extended absence (the longer it is normally the less likely it is to be successful) and this includes into new settings: a technical college for example.

Hello, I am in a similar situation with my 14 year old. I wonder as your post was written in 2020, what have you done since and has it been successful?

Many thanks

Yiakoumaki this is a zombie thread, you would be better starting your own thread.

Don't EHE unless you actually want to. If DC can not attend school for medical reasons, including because of anxiety, the LA have a statutory duty to provide education. Here is the English guidance, other UK nations have similar.

In addition to this, you should apply for an EHCP, or the equivalent if you don't live in England.
