If I said "get some cheese spread"

What would you get - Dairylea type, or Philadelphia type?
What would you call the other type?

Well, I'd have asked before leaving the building - "what sort ?"

My ds would probably have got to that aisle in the shop then texted me "do you mean this or that?"

However, I would count philly (or shop's own equivalent) as 'spready cheese, in a tub, not triangles' so he isn't wrong, as you do spread it, and it is cheese. Hmm

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 04/10/2020 00:30

They do make Dairylea in tubs, and Cathedral city, Laughing Cow, and own brand. It's all exactly the same inside the tub, just the brands cost more.
I suspect you might have a point about clarity, but I NEVER eat Philadelphia type stuff, and do eat cheese spread. H even comiserated with me when they had none earlier in the week, so he is Still In The Wrong!
Grin I am feeling less ragey now, I might let him live (only half joking - final straw and all that...)

Nope you're wrong on two counts OP

1"spready cheese in a tub", is def cream cheese.
2 How can you eat that crap!

So I've changed sides to Team DH!!

Italiangreyhound · 04/10/2020 00:34

Oh I might think that Seriously strong cheddar spread too.

Yummyplainscones · 04/10/2020 00:42

I’m afraid I’m with DH, mainly because I can’t see the mention of ‘please’ in any of your posts. Get some cheese spread.....please. I stand corrected if you did say please Smile

After that my next thought was as per Italiangreyhound, seriously strong cheddar spread.

BreconBeBuggered · 04/10/2020 00:43

Spready cheese definitely comes in a tub, but a round tub, as any fule kno. And OP is bang on about the stupid triangles. Cream cheese is perfectly acceptable on a biscuit, or on bread, as long as you weren't craving cheese spread, which is a different animal altogether.
Stand your ground, OP. I've got your back.

ViciousJackdaw · 04/10/2020 00:50

I'd ask. I'd want to know if you'd like Dairylea, Primula, Laughing Cow or store's own. Philly is completely different.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 04/10/2020 00:56

No spready cheese in a tub is spready cheese in a tub - laughing cow, dairylea, cathedral city cheese spread. The triangles clearly indicated you are thinking along the dairylea lines

Philadelphia is cream cheese.

user27378 · 04/10/2020 00:56

Ooh OP. I was all outraged with you because cheese spread is clearly Dairylea, Laughing Cow or Primula and soft cheese or cream cheese is Philadelphia. But then I saw your second post and you actually asked for 'spready cheese in a tub not triangles' and now I'm firmly on the fence. I can completely see how this was misconstrued. I think he should have got both to be safe.

Inkpaperstars · 04/10/2020 01:01

I would definitely ask what you meant. If couldnt, would probably get spreadable cheese eg spreadable cheddar in a tub. I used to have spreadable brie sometimes which was quite nice. I know all brie is spreadable but this was very low effort.

I would probably get a variety of things including Philadelphia in case that was what you'd meant. I don't know Primula.

Inkpaperstars · 04/10/2020 01:03

I have just had a Philadelphia and marmite sandwich...can recommend.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 04/10/2020 01:04

@TheHighestSardine or you could just buy your DH the cheese he wanted and not be so controlling?

Its spreadable cheese not crack cocaine.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 04/10/2020 01:10

@DappledThings

I was with you at first. Cheese spread being Dairylea/Primula for sure. But afraid you've muddied the waters with your "spready cheese in a tub". That's Philadelphia..

That leg you had to stand on from your OP has been cut from you by your choice of words.

You’ve lost me too I’m afraid!

Spready is not the same as spread, and the fact that you specified NOT triangles, I would have heard as NOT Dairylea.

Sorry Sad

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 04/10/2020 01:13

Philadelphia doesn’t come in triangles, nor does any cream cheese. So if you eat dairylea type then it’s obvious you meant that, HIBU! 😂

YABU for not being able to open them though, you just pull the red tab in the opposite direction and it opens Grin

yetanothernamitynamechange · 04/10/2020 01:16

Dairylee's gross. I would probably buy it, but then divorce/leave whatever aboration of a so-called partner had requested it. I'm single though so fortunately spared such horrors.

flyingant · 04/10/2020 01:29

Cheese Spread = Dairylea/Primula
Cream Cheese = Philadelphia
Spready cheese in a tub = Too vague and could be anything, including Philadelphia.

Hamm87 · 04/10/2020 01:42

Any kind of soft cheese that is spreadable

RedRec · 04/10/2020 01:57

Philadelphia. If I wanted Dairylea I would ask for cheese triangles.

BalanceGreen · 04/10/2020 02:20

Philadelphia is 'spready cheese' in our house. If someone used else used the term 'cheese spread' I'd only think of Primula. We don't ever have Dairylea or equivalent.

That said, if I 'wrongly' described something I regularly ate and DP couldn't figure it out and brought back something I never ate, I'd get mad.

sashh · 04/10/2020 03:03

I'd get the tube stuff (if it still exist) and because I'm a snob explain to the person on the checkout (who doesn't care) that it wasn't for me.

As for triangles, you don't unwrap them, you use a knife to cut them in two.

You then use the tub and a couple of toilet roll middles to make a hovercraft (1 from the tub, 1 from the lid) and settle disputes with a hovercraft race.

whirlwindwallaby · 04/10/2020 06:18

I'd ask for either laughing cow or philly. Neither are just for spreading.

earlydoors42 · 04/10/2020 06:56

I would get Philadelphia. I have never called that cream cheese. That sounds gross :-/

sparklefarts · 04/10/2020 07:03

100% this

I thought primula at first but your actual wording would make me get Philadelphia

DiscontentedWoman · 04/10/2020 07:09

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS

I knew it! Cheese spread is NOT soft/cream cheese! All the suggestions - Dairylea (in a tub or triangles) Primula (which is delicious and still available) Cathedral city of cheapo own brand are all cheese spread. I feel vindicated!
Home Bargains do a President Brie spread in a tub and it's divine. Don't let the gendarmes see you eating it though...
