Blue Pigeon - term of endearment?

I've grown up with my grandfather and father both using this term affectionately with our dogs. As in "who's a blue pigeon?"

It only occurred to me the other day I have absolutely no idea where this came from or what it means.

I've tried googling but all I've found is that it's a slang term for someone who steals lead off rooves. And I'm not sure that's what I'm looking for!

Does anyone else use this phrase and where has it come from?

I don't think I've ever heard it from anyone other than my grandfather or father.

Entirely possible it's something just from their side of the family but it seems a bit odd.
