How long were the original mods around for?

Hi all,

Random question purely out of interest...

Ive been watching White Teeth on Netflix (read it ages ago) and was a bit surprised to see that there was still a mod scene in 1974/5. I know there was a later revival with bands such as the Jam, and that parts of the Mod scene turned into skinheads etc. But does anyone know whether people were still dressing in that style in the mid 70s or was it just a few hanging on?

Just interested as I've read 'The Absolute Beginners' from 1958 where the characters were mods in a early form and it seems unusual that a youth scene should last so long!

Arguably a lot of mods never grew up or grew out of it. There's still a fairly healthy mod scene around Glasgow.

As an actual fashion, about three years.

As diehards and revivalists, who’s to say?

Still a bunch of wallies though. Gene & Eddie forever!

It’s a bit like goths, punks, metalheads or whatever. They become v.popular, become mainstream and then fall out of favour for a bit but lots of people stay true to their ‘tribe’. It’s tends to cycle every few decades you see a version of what went before.
