I was diagnosed as having gestational diabetes at 32 weeks because I was right on the cut off of 5 on my fasting blood test result at the glucose tolerance test, my 1 hour test after the glucose solution was 9.4 with their cut off being 10 and my 2 hour after was perfect, (they didn’t tell me the numbers). This was my 2nd glucose tolerance test having passed the 24 week with perfect results. The reason I was sent for 2nd test was because my baby was measuring big at scans, but the nurses had been commenting on his size since my 21 week scan and I was clear for diabetes after that stage. I’ve been monitoring my blood sugars 7 times a day for nearly 2 weeks now and being strict on my diet and I can keep to the limits of below 5 before meals and below 7 an hour after meals, the only trouble is before bed, I’m supposed to keep below 5, and never can, but it’s only barely over like 5.1 - 5.6 and has never been 6 or higher. Sometimes before meals I can go into low 4’s and even 3’s which I had read to be too low. My concern is that at my last appointment the diabetes specialist barely glanced over my results and started to talk about starting me on injecting insulin, I had presumed because my results were good they would let me carry on controlling it by diet, he agreed to let me do that for another 2 weeks but said it was inevitable I would end up on insulin either way at the end of the pregnancy because they want to stop the baby growing to be huge, so in 2 weeks I have to start injecting insulin. I’m a bit confused by this as anyone I have heard of that has had GD was let control it by diet, and i didn’t think mine was a severe case, I’m also worried that taking insulin could make my sugars drop too low because I do have lows before meals... I can’t help but wonder if it’s possible that maybe the baby is just big and it’s it not due to diabetes, my partner was a big baby and the midwife commented that he’s big all over, tall too, it’s not just a big head or a big belly so not to worry. He was estimated to weigh 5.6lbs at 32 week scan and 6.4 at 34 weeks. I suppose I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this or has any opinions on it
