I've been looking in to changing the surname of one of my DCs and had assumed there would be an official uk site to use but it seems like there are so many all with different prices.

I've also just read that it can be done for free! I'm really confused.

Has anyone recently changed a name? How did you do it?

Thanks.

There is no such thing as an official website in the uk to change your name. Don't pay for anything, you might as well just make your own certificate at home.

In the UK you can just start using a different name if you want. My dh did this. However, you can't change a child's surname without the permission of anyone who has parental rights.

Have you read the advice on the gov.uk site?

Both parents agree so that's not a problem.

So it's £36 and you have to follow the instructions on the government website. If you are over 16 you can just announce it yourself and you don't have to pay.

In addition to my original question has anyone had any experience of changing names at school, on school applications, school records etc? Is the deed poll and letter of consent from both parents enough to change it? Thanks.
