Gosforth vs. Ponteland with pre teens

I'm returning to work in Newcastle next year and I'm looking for advice about where to live with pre teens. I went to uni, postgrad and first job there so know it fairly well, although haven't been back for a little over 10 years. I can't wait to be 'home'! The budget is 400-450k.

I'll be working in the city centre so gosforth appeals for it's proximity. However I've not idea about about how life would be there for the DC. Are there plenty of kids around to socialise with after school? Is it an area where young teens can safely take themselves to swimming practise/music school/friends houses etc.? Is it safe to cycle on the roads? I always loved Ponteland - would there be more freedom for the DC in terms of access to more activities independeltly? The commute would be comparatively a pain though.

I was hoping to spend time in Newcastle this summer looking at areas and schools but of course covid put and end to that (I'm currently abroad) so any insight from locals is very welcome. Also, if there are any other areas I haven't mentioned I'm very open to suggestions. Thanks :)
