What little things do you spend a lot of money on?

For me it is walking socks. We do a lot of walking/hiking and bad socks can cause all sorts of problems. So I spend silly money on decent socks - £25 a pair. But I think they are worth every penny. I've spent years testing out different brands and finally found my dream sock.

@homemadecommunistrussia I do use my library app, it's not that great though and I think I have gone through most of the books Grin

Another one - chocolate. I would buy Prestat but buy Dairy Milk or Ritter (although the amount I spend I should probably just save it up and buy the Prestat boxes Blush)

unicornpower · 29/09/2020 12:27

Ovulation sticks-I only use clearblue and it costs a fortune when you've been trying for ages and had super long cycles.

Dog food, insurance and toys for the two little dependants! worked out for both plus insurance we spend easily over £250pm as i always buy them things too.

Candles for sure!

FloofyAndYetFragrant · 29/09/2020 12:28

Oh I have a good one which no doubt people with teenagers will appreciate -

Charger cables

Buy shit, buy hundreds Grin Branded ones all the way.

non-negotiable are:

  • steak from donald russell
  • meat from local butcher
  • veg from local greengrocer
  • non-acrylic yarn
  • very specific european brand of tampons that I have to order for tons of money

non of these are small though.

small would be lazy day tiffin. No other gf tiffin comes even close :)

I think the unbreakable ones might actually not break 🤞

Chocolate! Obvs I buy the cheap stuff but I spent £15 on some hazelnut pyramid chocolates that lasted about an hour. Also, Gü hazelnut chocolate spread is much nicer than the cheap stuff. This is why I'm overweight...

gindinner · 29/09/2020 12:52

Tea, trainers for weight training, trainers for running, boots, make up, my hair (cuts and colour, shampoo and conditioner) gin

gindinner · 29/09/2020 12:52

I never ever buy cheap chocolate

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/09/2020 12:52

Coffee beans - I buy Monsoon Malabar beans from McCabes of Wicklow, it has ruined me for most other coffee though.
Fired Earth paint - it's water based so doesn't make me wheeze when it's fresh and there is good pigment density.
Laundry strips - DS and I are allergic to most supermarket laundry detergents except M&S own brand (which is only intermittently available here), so after lots of trials I now buy Tru Earth laundry strips. Definitely costs more per load but no mess, no itch, no artificial scents and gets the clothes clean.
Felted wool dryer balls - I used to use plastic but they made a hell of a noise so when they wore out I changed. Wool is much quieter, plus I can put a few drops of essential oil onto one to give my clothes a nice scent if I want (I never use fabric conditioner and my detergent is unscented).

gindinner · 29/09/2020 12:53

Oh yes and perfume

gindinner · 29/09/2020 12:55

I only buy expensive tights, and haven't had to buy a new pair for 3 years,

Puddlepop · 29/09/2020 12:56
  1. Coffees in cafes - I cannot recreate the atmosphere and that amazing obscure music playlist at home.
  2. Artisanal chocolates - always lured by packaging.
  3. Imported pasta in uncommon shapes from small batch suppliers - also drawn in by packaging. Of course while buying these, I’d also have to stock up on exotic looking jars of pistachio pesto, pasta sauces and every other non-essential item on the shelf.
  4. Brown / Penhaligon’s / Aesop shower gel and handwash - it all goes down the drain but I justify it weakly by imagining that the washroom smells nicer.

All together, they’re less expensive and more accessible than a holiday.

Anjo2011 · 29/09/2020 12:58

Wolford tights, diptyque candles, decent bread, farm shop meat.

FloofyAndYetFragrant · 29/09/2020 12:58

I love that cars are "little things" to you Grin

What cars, we need to know!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/09/2020 13:02

For buying charger cables I find that the Amazon Basics ones are the best. I always try to find a local, small business version before I buy Amazon but since I tried these I don't bother with any others. The braided Apple ones never break, although they do get lost/left behind by teenagers. I bought a 10 pack of bright red, 1.8m long cables for visibility and they are lasting really well.

WinWinnieTheWay · 29/09/2020 13:04

Tinned Tomatoes
Candles
Coffee Beans

SandyGin · 29/09/2020 13:04

The children.

gretagreengrapes · 29/09/2020 13:05

Another vote for Falke socks, but the cashmere blend ones. So much warmer and cosier for everyday winter wear. (Bought on sale in Galeries Lafayette in Paris)

Coffee beans.
Sourdough / ciabatta from local bakery.
La Roche Posay skincare.

SandyGin · 29/09/2020 13:09

@gindinner

I only buy expensive tights, and haven't had to buy a new pair for 3 years,
This reminded me of a much loved and quoted put down, I think originally from Cilla Black: 'I've got tights older than you'.
