What name(s) do you irrationally hate?

I'll start.

Denise.

I don't know any Denises... I'm sure they're lovely. But the name just rubs me up the wrong way.

NOTE: No Karen bashing please! Because it's been hijacked as a name and it's not fair on Karens.

@WindyPudding

OK here's a totally irrational one - Anne (or Ann) - I really hate it but don't know why. For me it summons up a very uptight, disapproving woman in horrible shoes, yet I've never known an Ann like that. However Annie is totally different, she sounds like a barrel of laughs who would be great at swearing.
You just don't live next door but one to my mother (and opposite her best mate).

One with an 'e', one without. Both are your description to a T - or in this case, to an 'E' (or not).

Most names ending in -ie: Ellie, Sophie, Annie, Elsie, Gracie, Archie, Charlie...

'Wet' names (bit of a nebulous concept I know): Polly, Lucy, Posy, Neville, Robin, Rupert, Nigel, Colin, Percy, Milly, Molly, Daisy, Crispin, Toby yadda yadda.

What I think of as very stereotypical, jolly hockey sticks English names: Philippa, Harriet, Timothy, CCressida, Winston etc

SionnachRua · 07/04/2021 16:37

Oh god, someone on this thread has mentioned BETH! Jesus it's the name equivalent of nails down a chalkboard to me Grin

GattinaGattona · 07/04/2021 17:44

Collin is bad enough but Colm annoys the hell outta me, it sounds like you’re eating the word and not finishing it 😖

Surely it is a diminutive for Elizabeth? I don't mind it if it is, wouldn't like it if it was a stand-alone name. Then there is Bethany of course.
brakespeare · 07/04/2021 19:06

Tanya / Tania
Never met a nice one!
(Sorry Tanya's)

jessstan2 · 07/04/2021 19:08

I don't care for Tanya, the same for Tina and Cindy. They don't seem like real names to me.

Happycat1212 · 07/04/2021 19:11

Agree with Tanya never met a nice one either they’ve all been loud and gobby, same for Tara

I hate Keith just sounds so ugly

I've taught a Beth who was just Beth, no diminutive there. But tbh I don't care about that aspect of it - Elizabeth, Bethany etc are all the same level of horribleness if Beth is the nickname.

Craig is pretty grim. Even more awful when an American pronounces it as, "Creg"!

AdelaideK · 07/04/2021 21:08

I see someone has mentioned Percy. That's got to be one of the worst names out there. I think I'd struggle not to laugh if someone introduced themselves as Percy.

OldChinaJug · 07/04/2021 22:08

Brian, Gary and Keith. I would never date a man with those names.

Or names like Callum and Kayley which my ex husband always said sound like someone coughing up phlegm.

shinynewapple21 · 07/04/2021 22:47

Well done knew I'd see DS name on here - several times !

Very popular boys name early 2000s

Strangely it's been disliked by someone as being chavvy, and by another poster because they deem it too middle class Grin

Fozzleyplum · 07/04/2021 23:30

The only name I can think of which I dislike because it was the name of an absolute horror, is Hayley, who was the universally feared (and physically enormous!) school bully.

There are names which I really dislike the sound of, but when they belong to people I know and like, the name takes on a positive "spin", even though I don't like the sound. For me, they would be:

Alice
Alison
Amelia
Amanda
Christine
Darcey
Emma
Sara/Sarah

Alan
Darren
Paul
Simon
Alfie
Archie
Bertie(and most other "cutesy" boy names ending in an "ie" sound)
Finn

Out of those, Brian is all right. It's a very old name, popular in Ireland. I don't like the others.
Sandra15 · 08/04/2021 02:20

Emily, Amelia, Amelie, anything like that. Ruth. I think it is boring and verging on ugly. Rachel, probably because I worked with an awful person called that. My own name is Alexandra and I hate Lexi, too.

No offence to anyone with these names is intended.
