What name(s) do you irrationally hate?

I'll start.

Denise.

I don't know any Denises... I'm sure they're lovely. But the name just rubs me up the wrong way.

NOTE: No Karen bashing please! Because it's been hijacked as a name and it's not fair on Karens.

Freya also. Just makes me think of deep fat Freya in a Scottish accent

subbysammiexoxo · 04/04/2021 23:59

My own first name, can't stand it it was a popular baby name was I was born in and continued to be popular my parents picked it because it reminded my mum of her exchange student not realising it's a tad common

My name has been mentioned but my children's haven't, which I think means I'm better at naming kids than my parents. :)

Itching to ask you what's wrong with my name though but it would be a bit outing! Grin

So I get the thread is meant to be light hearted, but do names really give people such strong reactions? Do you instantly judge people who have said names, or dislike your kids playing with them?

I can understand to a degree the people who dislike a name because of an association with a specific person or past events but even then it seems so odd. I know a Nigel who is an utter bellend, but I don't hate the name Nigel, just him.

Then you've got the middle class being mocked, the working class or chavs being mocked, the people that go with the popular choices, the people who try to do something individual or step away from convention, it seems no one is safe.

If this thread were about other aspects of peoples identity, such as "which accents do you irrationally hate" it would be classed as discriminatory.

Imagine how disheartening it might be to an expectant or new parent, who think their name choice is beautiful, or named after a beloved parent/grandparent and they look at this thread and see the name mentioned 50 times with RandomUser987654321 saying "Just the sound it makes reminds me of throwing wet lettuce against a pig carcass"

I know I'm coming across like a fun sponge, but for a light hearted thread, it sure is mean spirited.

Hate Daphne... it just sounds wrong. Like it should be Daphine. I also don’t like Hugh... it’s annoying how it’s so breathy. Hugo is better.

Badabingbadabum · 05/04/2021 00:59

Mia. I know it was popular for a while and I'm sure there are lots of lovely Mias about. But it is a sound, not a name.

Friendofdennis · 05/04/2021 01:36

Fridah

cakebythepound1234 · 05/04/2021 01:41

Names where the parents have tried too hard to be original and different without thinking of the child who has to live with that name. Nellie really gets on my nerves, it sounds awful and just makes me think of that Nellie the elephant song. Awful, and just ugly sounding.

I agree with the first part of your post. A neighbours 3 year old is called a mix of mum and dads name. It’s a name that everyone will say, “Uh? Did I hear that right? Surely not! 🥴”

I also agree that “Nellie” sounds “awful” and reminds me of the song about the elephant (as does the name Ellie). However, I love the name Nel ❤️
