How would you repair this coat?

DS has just worn his winter coat for the first time this year to walk the dog, came home and caught it on our postbox and ripped it. It's a polyester material so I'm pretty sure it can't be sewn.

Any advice? Thanks

Where is the tear? Somewhere you could cover it with a patch / badge?

It's near the top of the arm. I thought about a badge but I don't know how I'd fix it on as the material can't be ironed or sewn really?

Could you not iron it with a cloth over the top to protect the fabric?

Afaik it can be sewn with a fine needle, I'd sew that closed and then cover it with a sewn on patch.
If it frays easily do a row of backstitch 1/4" inside, around the tear, and take your repair stitches over that line.

< Scuse the crappy Paint job.
